the problem w make up is that most of it is heavily tested en animals on a pretty nasty way... I don't know, feel like such an ego thing to me: "makes me feel good" but makes definitly some animal suffer... And it's all about the fake thing you know, why pretend to be better? I mean this is a hipppy sight, and this is a feminist theme, and we are talking make-up without even questioning it, yeah, times are really changing, i think it is this new-age vibe saying "do your thing, everything is ok if it makes u feel good, you deserve it". Does the animals deserve it?? U might say, it's just mice or rabbits... And I say, well you have a long way to go when it comes to basic compassion. What goes around, comes around....

the main reason people want to feel better about themselves is because society tells them it is important to be beautiful. i think it is a problem with society not individuals. it only makes them feel good because we are living in a world where beauty is held in high respect, that is the problem.

Nope, I have never bothered with the stuff.

Firstly, I have big issues when it comes to animal testing, even though things like the body shop exist..I still feel uneasy about it.
Another reason is that I see no point in it. If people are going to like you, they will like you for who you are, not for anythign you wear. If they like you for make-up or clothing, then they don't really like you for YOU, do they? I have no desire to change my apperance for anyone.
...Besides, it's sticky, time consuming, and clogs up your pores....it makes me shake my head at women scrambling for a vanity mirror just in case something falls out of place.

LOL I buy it for a living. (I'm a cosmetics buyer for a drug store chain) I do wear it to work every day. If I didn't every cosmetic rep would want to give me a make over, and I have sensitive skin so I can't have people putting shit all over my face. But if I had my way, I'd be working in a gym all day sweating my butt off and I would most certainly not wear make up there. I don't wear it on the weekends either because it is horrible for your skin. (lol, guess I'm not boosting sales here huh) Plus, my boyfriend loves it when I don't wear any. He says its the real me. I think, damn, what the hell do I look like with the make up on?

lol I went back and read some of these posts. I just have one question, we are supposed to like people for who they are right, not if they have make up on or not? I mean that is what most of you claim. So, do you meet people with make up on and automatically assume that they are covering something up, or trying to be something they are not, or freaking out about the rat their make up may or may have not been tested on. Are you really that pre-occupied with what they have on their face, or are you trying to get to know them as a person and listening to what they are saying. Just wondering how many hypocrites we have out there in the audience tonight. That is all. :)

I was wondering the same thing! =)

I think one of the main principles of feminism is to feel good about yourself based on your own standards of what a woman should or shouldn't look like, act like, and be like. If that means denying traditionally feminine "looks," such as make-up, then good for you. If you like to celebrate your femininity by reclaiming & revelling in traditionally feminine "looks," such as make-up, then good for you too! All that's important is that we are living by our own standards of beauty (and otherwise), not society's.

I say made-up or not, we all just need to appreciate our own unique beauty and style, as well as that of every other woman on this planet.

    =)

I do wear foundation and usually blush (I'd look like a ghost without blush) to work daily... just because my skin tone is so uneven. I have several spots on my face that for some reason are reddish all the time. Plus I have a scar under one of my eyes and I feel like people look at it, instead of me.
But, if I'm home, or on weekends, or even on a vacation, I never usually wear any make up. In the summer I wear it way less often, because here it is always in the 100's (F) so I just sweat it all off and break out. When I was in Paris last year I didn't wear makeup most of the time, and I felt so naked compared to all the girls and women I saw, they all look so pretty and chic and together.
I like only natural looking makeup. I really dislike when women wear too much, or not the right color... especially when they don't wear the right color foundation and you can see a line all the way around their face.
I've always been told you should wear makeup to accentuate the face you have, not to try to change it. Also, I think the best make up is when you can't tell you have it on at all (except like eyeshadow or eyeliner)
I like my eyes, so I try to play them up sometimes. I used to wear only glasses, so I would hide behind them, so it is fun to play with different colors.I do like mascara, but I don't wear it every day.
I don't always wear makeup to work though... sometimes I'm just like, hell, it's just work, it's not like I'm going to see Brad Pitt... or sometimes I would rather go spend ten minutes snuggling with my sleeping fiance in bed rather than stand in front of the mirror. I work in an office full of women though, so sometimes they can be mean if you don't conform to "professional standards"

i think make up is the stupiest crap they ever invented and it makes you look like a manequin...not the real you, but who you think you want to be when really you want to be something but are covering it up...ironic, really isn't it?

there is a difference between a little bit of mascara and a full face paint job. by your definition wearing certain clothes could be "hiding the real you" if it changed your apperance.

what is ironic is that you make this little righteous speech when in actual fact you are judging a person based on how they look, when it should be what's inside that counts, regardless of what they put on their face or body.

a note on the animal testing, most department store makeup and the higher end makeup brands do not test on animals...clinique, lancome, estee lauder, stella, benefit...most of the brands in sephora claim to not test on animals...so it only take a little extra moolah to be socially conscious...which i think is worth it...

    that said...

i love makeup. i think its fantastic and its a lot of fun to play around with...i have basketsfull of the stuff in my room... i'm a painter and i look at makeup as a way to just paint yourself.

everyday i wear powder and mascara and some blush and lipgloss or lipstick in a natural color, just shiny...i usually don't wear eyeshadow or eyeliner.

however, i think there is a huge difference between makeup that looks natural, (there is such a thing if you know how to buy the right colors and apply it the right way,) and people that wear way too much makeup and the wrong colors for their skin.

at night, when i go out, i play around, i'll wear gold eye shadow one night and purple eyeliner the next...but during the day i keep it simple, it's me, just a little more polished looking...

i also have an extremely good skincare regimen, which helps my skin, since i wear makeup. i cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize and i do a masque once or twice a month...and i NEVER go to sleep with makeup on.

there's no problem with not wearing it, most of my friends don't, unless they borrow stuff from me...but i'm girly and proud of it...

    damnit :)

there's my dissertation on makeup, i am done now...

I still do not see how it could be "hiding the real you". No one here has convinced me that by putting on make up I change who I am on the inside. I'm still the same me, I just get sick of people staring at my rosacea, or asking me if I'm hot, or telling me I look flushed. NO SHIT! If it makes me feel better or anyone else for that matter then who the hell are any of you to judge those of us who do like it and claim that we are not being true to ourselves. Our true selves like make up and we are proud of it and we aren't going to pretend that we don't to impress any of you. :) Have a super fun day.
