i for one give a shit. worst case scenario isn't one misspelled word; i've seen posts here that i honestly can't decipher (and i am referring to posts that are supposed to be in english). that being said, i don't use a dictionary; i just read over my post once before submitting it to make sure it makes sense and i didn't make any horribly obvious spelling or gramatical errors
I do read them over again before I submit....if it is a long post that matters to me I do somtimes paste and correct.
i kind of have to...it's a habit. i'm one of the two copy editors of my highschool newspaper... which leaves me to ponder whether or not highschool is one word.. it totally blanks my mind.. hehehe
most likely, but when i was 15 i could at still write well enough so that people could understand what i was trying to say. the really confusing posts are usually combinations of bad spelling and grammar, and i suspect that the usual causes are hurried laziness and not speaking english as one's primary language as opposed to being a few years younger. the solution then, would be to slow down and pay attention for the first case. for the second: i don't know the best solution, but a dictionary couldn't hurt
the only dictionary i ever found that was bigger then the one inside my head was the 23 volume oxford. none of which helps me spell worth a dam. the current iteration of foxfire though, underlines what it thinks are misspellings which is nice if it's only one letter off, but isn't a full spellcheck. notepad doesn't have spellcheck and neither does quick reply. so meh! there is only one reason to shiv a git about spling and that's to avoid ambiguities. where you've got two words that are phoneticly identical but could both be likely in the context the're used and could thus be distinguished by their spelling. this is generally the excuse that is used for making a big deal about spelling. which is valid up to a point. except that the commonness of this situation is WAY exagerated by those making a big deal out of it. usually as a way of bitching about something they lack the imagination or understanding to question on the basis of actual content. =^^= .../\...
A dictionary is unnecessary, just learn how to spell them basic words. English is my 3rd language; you don't see me typing like an idiot, or using a dictionary.
apparently you know english pretty well. some of the people on here apparenly don't, and in those cases i really don't know how much good a dictionary would do, since the problem is usually more with grammar than spelling anyway. but like i said, for these people who are still just learning, a dictionary wouldn't hurt; hell, it wouldn't hurt for anybody really; it just wouldn't help some people as much as others
I still do not see why people should bother with a dictionary on an online forum. This is not academic writing.
i could not care less about grammar, grammar can eat me i love words though, and using the right word, when i'm using my mac i can just right click over the word and it fixes it for me, even in the little internet box thingy alot of the time, the reason i check the spelling of a word is so that i can know it for later, it's a part of learning for me..otherwise i'd still have terrible spelling
I find that when I am typing a reply on a thread that I don't always know how to spell the words that I think of using, so I am encouraged to go to the dictionary and find out how to spell it correctly. I guess I have the time to be meticulous (should I look that up? No!). I am glad to have learned something new. You also help others to learn new words and accurate spellings. I homeschooled 5 daughters. I think that methods of early teaching, exposure to books and reading , and proper phonetics is the key to good grammer and spelling ability. It is also primary genetics, and I guess also personal motivation, and just the desire to learn with accuracy being a predominant characteristic of your orientation to language. I don't have a strong judgemental reaction to others mispelled words, improper grammar, and punctuation. I just note it, and try to figure out what they are trying to say. I have witnessed others pointing out errors, I certainly don't see the necessity of doing that. Perhaps saying that I can't endure incorrect spelling in myself is a little strong(meant to be sarcastic), I just make an effort to be accurate, and yes you must slow down a bit, and that is a lot to ask of most people in todays fast paced world. And by the way.............we don't see you using a dictionary. ! LOL
I use dictionary.com every now and then, just to make sure I'm not using a word in the wrong way. Also, people on here tend to shame me with their vast knowledge of the English language, so I'm often looking up words anyway.
i agree with you on that part. all i said was that it wouldn't hurt, not that i think people should use one. my only point really was that i do get annoyed by posts that are so poorly written that i can't figure them out. if someone can get their point across with improper grammar or spelling then i don't care
shut up pavel! if people want to learn let them learn! seriously more people need to learn....a little knowledge of the english language wouldn't hurt anybody...
If you want people to take you seriously, even if your posting on an informal site such as this one, then you need to use proper grammar and spelling. Of course people make mistakes that we do not catch until it's too late, but everyone should proofread. I rarely use a dictionary, but it has happened. I usually just do the best I can unaided.
