Sorry. I guess that was a bit vague. What I meant to ask is - What if you and I and everyone are the eyes and ears, the mind and the voice of the universe? What if you and I and everyone are the consciousness of the universe? There is an idea that the development of life and then animals and then humans (including you, of course) are the universe's way of becoming aware of itself. Whatever else we humans believe ourselves to be, we are products of the universe. If you consider for a moment how unlikely it is for a mass of infinitely hot, rapidly expanding matter to cool, condense and evolve into particles, atoms, molecules, compounds, ever more complex life forms, and points of consciousness (which, among other things, is what you and I really are), then you might stop taking yourself for granted and wonder what your consciousness really is. You might then wonder even more where your consciousness comes from. There is no conclusion you must come to, but, sooner or later, you will probably recognize a feeling of awe and mystery. The next question, of course, is - what, if any, is the limit of how much further we can and will evolve? It is only a thought. Please, just consider it now and then. Peace and Love
My personal take on existence is that all was made (not from nothing) but from the substance of God. I have always seen a dim connection between the atoms inside a thinking individual (you or I) - those little proton and nuetron things - and the planetary systems inside the universe with their planets in suspiciously similar orbits. Could we exist within God? Are we the smallest parts? Could our universe be in orbit around something else?:H
I didn't mean for it to sound naive or insulting. I am sorry you interpreted it that way. Everyone has different beliefs and that is Okay. How could we all have the same? Not one of us were brought up the same or lived the same way. You and I don't even live in the same Country. I would be interested in hearing what you believe. Whatever your beliefs are I will respect them.
we live in different places, my society differs from your society... Animals only kill eachother when their life is in threat.. Not for fun, or because the other animal cursed his mother or something this is going abit off-topic my friend, so if you want to reply reply in a new thread and we can discuss....
You sounded naive and i sounded insulting ..anyhoo I don't believe in any of it and the more i read see an hear about it it makes me think i should not even try.. From Richard the Lionheart and Saladin to the Marriage (or lack of) of Princess Margaret the whole church/state thing has made me a bit bothered ..because basicaly we should have awoken from such myths by now.. Sure i can accept a man named jesus put himself up for crucifixtion to show how to overcome evil but ...'son of god' ... god making the world/universe in 7 days, The Ark etc etc i have to be a bit cynical.. The phylosophy behind a lot of it i find inresting and it is just universal truths (a lot of it) so i don't need to 'believe' as such...Plus the bible is horribly edited to fit into some group of blokes idea of the way it should be anyway..It has caused to much trouble over the centurys ..
To anyone who doesn't believe in God... I ask you to consider this: A man appears in front of you and says "I am God and I made the universe". He performs some miracles. He says "please tell everyone I exist". You tell all your friends. They are amazed! You tell your children. They are amazed! Your friends spread the story to people who don't know you. They say "whatever". Your children tell their children, who tell their children. Your ancestors say "whatever". The problem with humans is that we're just unable to appreciate or believe anything that isn't immediately in front of us. Nobody cares about what happened to our ancestors because you can't prove any of it. Even if you write it all down in great detail in a book, and you die for what you believe in; even then people don't care. If you are looking for proof of God... Ask yourself: what sort of proof would be necessary for you to believe in God? There are many great stories of what God has done and said, but do you believe any of it unless it happens to you? The answer is: probably not. If you admit this, then you are admitting that — if God is real — then he should come and tell you personally. Okay, he created the universe, gave you life, and (allegedly) died for you. But that's not enough: you demand that he also makes a personal appearance in front of you and says "look, I'm here"! Doesn't this sound a little demanding? Why not, instead of being so sceptical, why not actually take the idea seriously and just talk to him? He can hear every word you say and every thought you think. Why not ask him if he exists; ask him to show himself to you; tell him that if he is real you would like to know about it and you're having trouble believing in him. Universal proof Yeah, but why doesn't God leave us universal proof of his existance? Like, a big easy way for everyone all over the world to know that God exists? Why are there no big signs in the sky saying "I made this"? I believe there is exactly that: a big sign in the sky saying "I made this". Only, God likes to keep things as simple as possible. So instead of a sign, we have two circular objects (the sun and the moon). They're the only two big objects in the sky (visible all over the world), and yet they are exactly the same size. It's a total coincidence, of course. The sun and moon could have appeared to be completely different sizes. But as it happens, they are identical in size (as viewed from Earth), and astronomers will tell you that the odds against this are phenomenal! I think this is a perfect sign of intelligent creation. Do you think it's just a coincidence? Me personally... Personally, I know that God exists because I got lucky. I was lucky enough to always have a beleif in him, so I didn't think talking to him was strange. And after a lot of talking, I started to realise that he is real, because everything I asked him for, happened and I felt closer to him. And when I was unsure which religion was the right one (because I am a very sceptical person) I got very lucky: I asked God to show me the right way, and right there and then he showed me a vision of a cross. So obviously, I'm a Christian now! Give him a chance! Take him seriously, and give him a bit of respect. Maybe you'll never be convinced, but don't just dismiss it. Don't expect to get a bright white cross like I did (I was extremely lucky!) From my experience, God seems to work in subtle and minimalist ways. He will do whatever is necessary and no more. But... there can't be a God with all these bad things happening!!!! Oh stop letting your emotions get in the way of your beleif! When good things happen, people think "there must be a God!" and when bad things happen, people think "there is no God!". Please don't be so ignorant! God gave us all that is good, but he doesn't control the Earth. He doesn't "make" bad things happen. Yes he "lets" bad things happen because he will not interfere with our lives unless we specifically give him our permission to. He cannot interfere with our lives because to interfere without permission would be to control us. And if he controls us then we're no more than puppets and not really alive. You ask "why doesn't God just leave us alone, but stop really terrible things from happening?". The answer is: where would God draw the line? Big accidents? Small accidents? Constipation? Hiccups? Sadness? Confusion? Lack of swimming ability? Bad breath? Or how about poor choice of company? Bad language? Greed? Just about everything in our lives could be "wrong", and God would arguably change it all if he had his way. That is why he doesn't interfere. Sure, thousands of people dying is terrible, but it isn't to God because he of all people knows that physical death is no big deal. He gives life; he takes it away. No big deal. But it's hard to see that on this side of death. I know this has all been said a thousand times before, but it never seems to sink in!
I have come to believe: God is a concept that should be open to interpretation. This life we live is not all there is for us. The energy inside us goes on forever. Our bodies are vessels for that energy. Why do we fear the dark? Because in our brains, that represents an absence of energy, whereas light indicates energy and life. The universe is limitless and teeming with life. Everything has been, is, and/or will be. Our particular energy is held on Earth by gravitational forces and thus, I would personally like to see Earth not get nuked by misguided, evil, or sick people. What we do while we are is important in that regard. the energy that resides within Terry Schiavo's damaged host pod may be a flower tomorrow. There is no reason to fear "death" but much reason to make the most of the wonderful opportunity we have to be a human being for 1 or 2 or 75 years. Yes, there is a God, that concept being a simple yet powerful metaphor for all the things beyond my comprehension that led to my being born 32 years ago. Religious teachings offer a mode of navigating this world. I believe "Thou shall not kill" is a decent thing to believe in and follow regardless. Some people think it would be fun to kill a person now and then. There is positive and negative energy after all. If humans could exist without brains, there would be no war but also there would be no Picassos or Beatles. It is heartening to me to know that Superman is a hero and Lex Luthor is a villain. It indicates that the natural collective tendency is toward positivity at least here on Earth. It is no accident, any of this. the universe is happening and we are each and every one a unique part of it. That is our purpose. If you don't agree with any or all of what I have put down here, I totally respect that. I am sure you will respond in whatever way you feel would best reflect how you feel inside, if you choose to respond at all. Peace (is what I wish for you)
this is called rationality. if there is a god, and he created everything, then he created logic, and he gave us our enormous ability to intellectualize and reason. i don't see why he would condemn us for using it. do you believe any of the other countless ancient recorded myths? flat earth on a turtle, sun gods, cows licking the frost off of the first ice-covered humans, and so on.. there's the one about adam and eve and the "tree of knowledge".. alas! your argument that we have let god down by using our head and logical caution before believing any crap handed to us is absurd. to quote thomas paine, "past revelation is an oxymoron. such things are not revelation at all, but merely heresay." okay, he created the universe, gave you life, and (allegedly) died for you... but you still demand something better than a millenia-old note? hell yes! demanding? are you serious? it's called logic, the very basest logic. so you say, okay... so let's forget the bible and the religion, let's just get up and shout out into space, "if you're there, god, let me know!". the times i have done this haven't amounted to anything. i can see how a person who really wanted to believe could easily fool themselves here. just like a person on an acid trip, or an obsessive compulsive, the wannabe-religious will look around in the following quiet and think they see magical evidence, like a face in a cheeseburger. there is no logical reason why god would hold back on real communication, unless he were evil, or nonexistent. are you serious? this reminds me of another post i read in here awhile back, where a girl said she believed in god because people spell his name with a capital G. anyhow, so you're dredging up the design argument - "the earth/sunset/flower is so beautiful and perfect! therefore, god exists." this has been defeated a million times over, generally after it's popularity in the 18th century slackened. so how do you argue against the person who also prayed to god, and asked, "i believe there is a god, but i don't know which religion is right.. please send me a message!", and recieved an image of shiva? do you deny this person's experience? david koresh was firmly persuaded that he was in intimate contact with god - was he decieved? religious experiences and feelings of seemingly divine presence are a common human occurance, but why should this be anything outside of the human mind? did god send you an image of a bright white cross, or was that your own desire for christianity? god doesn't work in mysterious ways; our minds do. stop letting your emotions get in the way of your belief...? ha ha! brilliant. better have a taste of your own medicine. when i was the biggest bible-thumper out there, i was completely controlled by my emotions and my fear of letting god down. the whole of christianity is based on fear. okay, think of this. god creates 2 perfect humans, completely and utterly innocent, first children of the earth. he gives them an ideal garden to live in, but throws in this tree of life and tells them not to eat its fruit, or they'll die... if this isn't absurd enough, he allows satan to creep around and tempt them as well. why does god allow satan a place? when we disobeyed him, he flooded the place and killed us all, but when satan disobeyed, he gave him his own place and let him roam around and screw us all over. confusing? a parent with 2 innocent babies will tell them not to touch a poisonous spider, but say an evil man goes and tells them to touch it anyway... do you stand quietly and watch this happen? these two innocents don't even know what evil is yet! then once the deed is done, you cast them off. where is god's infinite forgiveness, his omnibenevolence? if he knows everything, past and future, why did he even bother creating humankind if only to condemn billions of them to eternal torment? the whole thing reeks. i could go on here... why does god need us to worship him? what on earth does, "and thou shalt love the lord thy god with all thine heart, and all thy soul..." mean? thou shalt love me, or suffer eternal torment? is this really love, kids? not to mention the crazy morals of the bible - "if ye shall despise my statues... or abhor my judgements... i will also do this unto you; i will... apppoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of the heart..." etc, etc. it goes on and on, about pain and sorrow and starvation and all kinds of horrible things. what the fuck! and you wonder why christians live in fear of god! i doubt very much that any christian feels true love towards god; true love is between equals, friends. one can never feel true love for one's prison warden, who so clearly enjoys grandiose torture methods. you mean, it never seems to find an inch of sense. peace, sophia
When someone feels secure in their belief (or non-belief), there is no bitterness in their communication.
