Most of them I don't think are dangerous. I often talk for a bit with the guys who sell the 'straatnieuws' (homeless newspaper) and I rarely if ever feel uncomfortable with them. Only those who're drunk and/or high I avoid, but I avoid non-homeless too when they are drunk.

All of them? Isn't it sorta dangerous to lump an entire group together like that? And how do you treat them on the street (since you consider them so dangerous and everything). I'd agree that they are *potentially* dangerous. But that can be said of many other people that are actually housed.

    Peace,

I pretty much take the same approach. And it sounds like you have a very open mind. Thanks for the insightful comment.

@ Blackie: Trusting nobody isn't exactly a very optimistic way of living your life, is it? Never feeling really safe around even the people you care about... I'd rather kill myself. Of course not implying you should too, but if it's as bad as it sounds to me, I don't think life would be a lot of fun.

I don't feel less safe with a homeless guy or women around than in "normal" situations. I think biggest part of the youth is much scarier. Nowadays you can get stabbed, kicked or shot to death over nothing at all.

Everyone has the capability of being dangerous. So if you are going to fear homeless people, you might as well fear everyone else.

Yeah, I'm starting to feel the same way. That's why I decided to question my initial fears. And to get a few other folks to do the same. I still think it's mostly cuz folks are afraid to think about how some of us are only one paycheck away from being homeless ourselves. So we try and tune out the reality of that. And homeless folks are a constant reminder, etc.

i dont know about you, but if i became homeless, i think i would be living in the woods or something until i figured out what to do. i think the fact that homeless people walk around in populated cities means that there is something wrong with them already. this would give me a reason to fear them at least a bit more than non-homeless people.
but ive obviously never been homeless so i have no clue what some people go through.

we have a homeless lady called Joan who we see around the place. She has a child's keyboard that she plays...well she pushes the demo button and kind of dances along to it - her version of busking.

We made her an apple crumble the other day.

I once saw three of 'em dragging a drunken old homeless dude across the sidewalk. Downtown. During lunch hour. He was screaming in pain, and they were just laughing about it. All these people, and nobody said a word. Just pretended it wasn't really happening. That says it all right there.

    Peace,

Nope, just hanging out at a bus stop. But he was intoxicated. And homeless. So that's two strikes. There's always intoxicated middle class folks downtown, but they don't seem to get picked on as much by the cops. Cuz they know more about lawyers and such. The bottom line is this: Homeless folks are often treated like criminals. And they don't even have to be intoxicated. I've seen it happen a lot.

maybe this is naive, but wouldnt building like rest shelters at least in every other city for homeless people to escape the cold at least for a bit be a reasonable idea? they could just be small shed type buildings where they could at least take shelter from rain, snow, etc. i dont think it would cost anyone that much... or would that be "pampering" the homeless too much?
