Personally, I'm not as interested in the product of a performance as in the process of making music. I make music because I love doing so-- if people hear/experience it, are moved by it, appreciate it, etc. then that's great; if they don't it doesn't matter, because I'm not doing anything to gain their approval or adulation. I'm not going to tailor my creative expression so people will think more highly of what I do-- can we say "selling out"? No offense, but I think that's a load of crap. How many artists and musicians have been misunderstood, ignored or even reviled in their own lifetimes only to be elevated to great heights by later generations?
but then the later generations like their music see? but if they never produced it in the first place to be heard.. then later generations wouldnt know about them at all. well its interesting to see these views. i dont call it selling out when you try to write music that people like. i mean, i keep writing my own stuff until i find thigns that work. it would be selling out to look at what people want and to just make that. like metallica. st anger isnt metallica. its metallica trying to appease the newer generation of simpleton punk lovers who want simple feelings and connections with their ego, over good music. however at the start, they most probably went through a lot of shit before they found something that worked and that people liked. the beatles took years befoe they found what made teenage girls scream by the hundreds of thousands david bowie had lots of previous albums before space oddity
