Two squirrels sat in love The boy liked the company The squirrels were not scared The boy shared his food He enjoyed sharing his lunch Something was off though The big squirrel was strong The small squirrel was weak and slow It looked very frail As he placed the food The big squirrel would pass it on So the small could eat It could barely eat It was just hair skin and bones All its strength was gone The very next day On the way to the river The boy saw something He saw the two squirrels They were both on the dirt trail Something was wrong though The strong squirrel stood there The small squirrel was not moving It was not breathing The boy kneeling down Dug a hole with his one hand Gently placed inside Covered with warm earth The big strong squirrel would not move The boy walked away It was the next day The boy ate his lunch alone Something caught his eye Just in front of him In the water by the rocks It was the strong squirrel It was not moving It was not breathing either It passed on some how The boy felt the grief He walked to the trail of tears Dug another hole Next to the first one So they could be together They were always one
