We have a few famous lurkers, but I would not dream of outing them.

Imagine being a celeb, and not one moment to be your real true self, always wearing a mask and playing a public image role.

Now imagine the fun of getting online here and spouting your true feelings about this or that, without being manipulated by the press and being hounded by fans.

Indeed, Zen, I think there are times when they may feel like they are in prison. Imagine having a viewpoint on an issue and the desire to contribute to the debate but, for fear of ending their career, they are 'forced' to maintain silence. I would find that a real constriction. Other times when local celebs or public facing people have been in difficulties, I've considered offering them residence until the heat dies down.
However, how would one do that when to them I may be just some random weirdo?!

No, but that's only because there's so many hackers and companies out there who sell information, or try to blackmail people about the private things in their life.

Also, after my brother died, I had no one I could even half-trust.

I wouldn’t see any point in lying online. There may be slight exaggeration for effect, but never outright lies. Sometimes, it occurs to me that people may think that I am bullshitting them. What would be the point of bigging myself up when no one knows who I am in real life. I see the anonymity as an opportunity to be totally frank and tell about things I normally keep to myself, It’s liberating not to care what anybody thinks about me. If people are querulous, I can just ignore them. Sticks and stones and all that.

Hip hasn’t been a bad as say lpsg, there is always someone on there trying to twist your words into insults.
I once referred to a couple of women I dated as girls, OMG, I was attacked for a week, the same half a dozen female then proceeded to try and have me removed.
The women I was referring to were about 19 at the time but I typically refer to women as ladies or girls. Only use woman when one pisses me off.

I don't think there's any way I could express myself if I couldn't do it like this.

I agre with this. Personally I find being faceless puts one in a almost fresh neutral situation, were people cant judge you by appearance, colour, or your health, or what you wear. One has the chance to be themselves who they are on the inside. Although like you shay its always good to find a balance and obviously think about what you share and who with.

Just some advice for those who may want to pretend to be something they are not. You shouldn't have to do that as your fine as you are. An if people cant accept you for who you are they arent really worth your time, there are plenty of other folk in the world who will accept you so they can move on. Also just remember lies only lead to more lies and more trouble and more negativity. Its just not worth it, your great as you are.

although i try to not doxx myself, if someone were to put all the pieces of the puzzle together, they might be able to figure out some personal info about me.. I mean, I post my face and general location all the time, so I'm not too worried about it.. If someone I know IRL were to come across me on this site, it would be more awkward for them to confront me about it than it would for me to be confronted. And if they DO confront me about it, it would probably be because they wish to share our like-mindedness in real life..

Yeah I think it's a good forum and I tell it virtually as it is....more than I would want any relative or acquaintance to be reading posthumously....blush.

Hip Forums is an important platform, I think. Really gets to the root of the human condition and human psychology like no other website I’ve ever frequented.

With 8 billion people on the planet, there are very few original thoughts anymore. HF provides the requisite anonymity to be able to share and work through all of those outlier thoughts and feelings that might not be so welcome in your everyday life.

Has been extremely helpful to me over many years now! In addition to be cheaper than a psychologist, you get better insight about whatever road you are going down from people who’ve actually traveled it themselves.

(PS - This account is only 3 years old, but I had a previous now inactive account that goes back to 2008.)

Same with me except I ran into a overbearing mod, who BTW isn't around anymore, that put a ban on my account. Oh well, I'm back now and enjoying the forum.

  14. Forums like this usually just allow me to not care so much. Basically I’m free to be extra weird.

I prefer anonymity, only because the major social media platforms mine and sell your information. Not to mention they are heavily censored at times. As for this platform being a place to pretend, I’m sure that goes on like it does on every other platform out there. Our corrupt and broken society has created too many broken people. For some, having a fake online persona is the only time they feel that they belong.

The anonymity is both freeing and a turn on, I guess. Also, the fact that the other members value the anonymity is great. Our real lives may not be cool with people being straight forward about their desires, but in here, tell me your kinks and I'll tell you mine! I love it.

I've never considered myself anonymous. I expose my face. I speak of things that I like and dislike. I have photos of places I have been to and activities that I perform. The only thing I don't post is the name I use in the non-magical world and my street address. But, then again, the government doen't have my street address either.

The whole online anonymity thing made for some intense debates/arguments that just could not happen in real life where a physical fight could break out.

Like no way at my favorite bar-resteruant if I see some nonsense on the news on their tv can I just blurt out exactly what I think like in a comment section then debate anyone who replies.

Maybe off topic but in the real world I refuse to use an address. How is the location of where I sleep and store my valuables anyone's business?

Besides maybe voting why is where I "live" anyone's business?

Also recently I had to have some emergency dental a tooth pulled I paid cash why did they ask social security number? I just made up a fake because the intake tablet thing would not let me go to the next page with it blank.

All these TV ads warning of identity theft I should just trust anyone that ever works or has access to some dental office computers wont scoop it up? Name birthday ss number address...

I like the anonymous part because it’s freeing I can be me on here and not worry about what others think of me.
