I have recently become aware that people will not only act like what they see on TV or social media, but are now completely living on social media likes. More and more, critical thinking and individualism have been replaced by a herd mentality in which the majority live like sheep following the masses. It is concerning to think that the novel 1984 is very close to the way society is now.

You are so true. But it seems like very few people can see this, for themselves.

This perfectly describes my parents when I go visit them they have Fox News on morning noon and night. Their completely brainwashed. Any of those slanted news stations will do that to someone who chooses to watch that stuff.

My neighbor recently came and insisted my wife and I go to the local bar with her. We don’t normally go to bars. When we got there all she wanted to do is have one drink to take a boomerang photo for her social media crap and go. Posting her fake life on social media has defiantly brainwashed her way of thinking. That’s just one example of her crazy brainwashed values.

Please people, be your original self.

I understand. I have family members who use their children to get more likes and attention on social media. Yet they cannot be present in their children's lives without posting about what will get more attention on social media. They live in a virtual world that, in my opinion, prevents them from enjoying the wonderful life they have.

That is because we are conditioned to believe that happiness and fulfilment are found in the approval of others instead of ourselves.

    Just a clarification:
Brainwashing is term that was coined in 1950 to describe the process of forcibly altering one's beliefs through psychological manipulation such as sleep deprivation, dietary restrictions, the threat of physical harm, isolation, dependency, etc.
Usually it is defined as erasing, at least temporally, one's old beliefs and instilling new ones.

In my opinion most of the examples in this thread would be indoctrination, not brainwashing.

We are all conditioned to some degree, in as much as we are connected via secondhand information about this world.

Part of the problem is that mass media has a veneer of credibility. It is not totally dishonest, and journalistic integrity does matter to people, and does have consequences. What people in general seem unaware of, however, is how the curation of news stories by certain outlets are meant to slowly and subtly craft a certain perspective of the world within the audience.

Most people don't have the energy or interest to go further into the streams of money and interests that handle the molding of the public mind. But it is informative. For example, Oracle is now a massive stakeholder of the US-facing end of TikTok—which means that Larry Ellison will be making decisions on how the algorithm will be re-trained after receiving a copy of it from ByteDance. If you do some reading about Larry Ellison, you can be sure there are going to be some politically-motivated changes to the TikTok algorithm soon.

Larry Ellison's son, David Ellison, has just merged Skydance Media and Paramount Global. As CEO of Paramount Skydance, David Ellison has authority over
5, BET, CBS, CBS News, CBS Sports, Chilevisión, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Network 10, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Paramount+, Paramount Network, Paramount Pictures, Paramount Animation, Pluto TV, Pop, Showtime, Skydance Animation, Skydance Sports, Smithsonian Channel, Telefe, and TV Land. So you have a father and son at the helm of those companies + the TikTok algorithm. Going into Oracle would be too extraneous here, but that's a behemoth in its own right. Surely your imagine can roam about the possibilities here with these two human beings, without even broaching the extended networks and powerful figures which they mesh with...

Anyways, I learned some time ago to be careful about having strong feelings or taking sides on things, where I hadn't taken the time to do my own research, research the other side's sources, etc. The world is run by people who want you to support what they are doing. Keep an open mind. :)

    This is exactly right!

They very cleverly design their so-called news broadcast to look like the news we grew up with (ABC, CBS, NBC). Buts it’s far from that now. It amazing they even can call In news. In watching my parents it’s become a comfort zone for them to sit and watch their Fox News all day.

I’ll use a metaphor to describe my point.
If you were to walk in a straight line for 100 miles on open land from south to north but the land you were walking on was very slightly tilted to the right (say 1 to 2 degrees). At the end of the 100 miles you’d be off track to the right without realizing it until the end.

The old news as we remember it tried to be level, impartial and just report the story. Old Walter did have his editorial minute. There, he would tell us how he see’s it but he would let you know these were his thoughts and not the news.

When I was a youngin' , and news was introduced on a nightly basis on the 3 existing channels---the news was i5 minutes long. Kind of the beginning of the end of the radio era.. when everyone had radio and almost no one had tv. Eventually the news programs expanded to 30 minutes on the three channels. The news in those days was pretty much JUST news as issues were related in a straightforward manner. There is no comparison to today's all encompassing, endless stream of legitimate news, entertainment and outright repetitive bullshit and propaganda that is repeated ad nauseam. The bloggers, the "influencers" ,the overt propagandists and some so-called news stations are pretty easy to fact check--but obviously MANY, MANY don't bother.
