Do you donate? If so, what organization(s) do you donate to? What is it you donate, ie money, time, other resources? How/why did you choose the organization that you did?

I used to always happily donate my dollar at the check out to random charities, participate in walk-a-thons and actually raise thousands of dollars until I started reading about charities and really looking into them and finding out that a lot of charities are corrupt. Charities raise so much money and people think their money is going to a good cause but it seems some organizations make a profit.

So you really have to research the organizations you're giving to.. In the past I used to donate, but not so much recently because everything is so corrupt and I really don't have a lot of money to be giving away at the moment anyway. It seems it's probably a better choice to donate your time to charities instead of funds.

I do often donate clothes to good will. And I guess my body is going to be donated once I die.

are you really a sperm donor?

used to donate to D.A.V. still do but dont have the money for it now. maybe i will send $5. the next time im in a good mood, i have an envelope sitting on my desk from them asking for a donation so when i next check my bank online and see that i have more than i expected i will send them something.

the why? i guess because i couldnt imagine losing a limb and these guys did it helping the country...or some corporations in the country. you can hate the war and still love the soldier.
i also am a fan of donating to cancer research but it seems like a lost cause.

I think it's more rewarding to donate your time, but I haven't done that in a long time. I can't remember what organization it was with, but it did some reforestation a couple of times in the past. I also served food once for Thanksgiving at one of the Salvation Army sites. Both were great experiences, the planting tiny trees was more more exhausting and for a longer time, but I got to go to some cool rural areas I had never been. The Salvation Army thing was easy and fun, I wish I had done that for a longer time. Maybe I should look into it again.

Besides that I've donated money to Plan USA because I used to work as a fundraiser for them and I got to meet a kid, not really a kid he was 18, but it broke my heart how innocent he seemed, from a village in Uganda where they were helping and it seemed like a nice organization. I've donated stuff to some kind of veterans thing a couple of times too.

I always day I should get back into doing volunteer work and then I never do. Although in a way I'm doing some volunteer work right now, but not for any organization.

I'm wary of making charitable contributions for the reasons someone else already listed in this thread, but I donate to people directly in my community. I give all the stuff my son grows out of to this woman I met through freecycle.org who works for a program that helps unmarried teen mothers. I've taken supplies to the tent city in my town and I've frequently donated money to various kickstarter campaigns. I also give money any time a homeless person asks for it, just a dollar or 5.

I would really like to volunteer for the literacy society but I haven't been able to find the time yet.

Occasionally when someone comes asking and I have heard about their charity and have some trust in it (because frankly what Rainy said is often true unfortunately). But not on a regular basis.

What kind of work if I may ask? :sunny:

Right. Not for profit could send them into a frenzy of expensive lunches and "business trips" to ensure no money is retained. No profit at all.

We do in a very controlled, localized fashion.
We have our own business working with elementary school kids.
As part of the curriculum for 5th-6th grade in Ca. the kids can spend a week at an outdoor science camp, but it costs over $500.
So what we do is set aside 10% of the registrations fees we collect at a school, then each year we have gotten a store front in the mall and open a "Gift Wrap service" store from Black Friday until Jan 7.
We have people from the schools work it and then they get paid based on the total $$$ earned AND we add the money that had been set aside from registration fees.

So far we have been able to help send about 15 kids to camp.
Not a lot, but it makes a big difference to those kids/families and we actually see/have some control over how the money is used.
We don't even give the money to the people, we pay the camp fees on their behalf.
Every year it has cost us between $500-$1000 out of pocket in supplies and lots of time.
We have also over the last decade donated approximately $15,000-$20,000 in materials, time and work to the elementary school our kids attended.

Beyond that I have logged many hours at the local food bank and my wife has been involved with scouting since the beginning of time.

BUT I do not donate to any "big" charities for the reasons cited previously by others.

p.s., Goodwill Industries is NOT a charitable organization. They are a "for profit" organization and the head honcho makes a good bit of $$$.
BUT what Goodwill does do that many others do not is they employ people nobody else will, so in that respect they are "helping" their local communities, so in that respect I have no issue with Goodwill.

i rarely donate money to anything. i am quite selfish with my money i guess.

my wife has a major problem saying no when they ask at the grocery checkout "would you like to donate a dollar to ____?"

we donate old clothes every once in awhile.

and i donate blood a couple to a few times per year, to the red cross. although the last time i donated, i felt kinda shitty for the first time ever. i will be a little hesitant to donate when it comes around next time. and...i'm not quite sure it qualifies 100% as "donation," because where i live now, they always give you a free movie ticket, and often some other reward like a free pound of coffee from dunkin donuts or a free half gallon of ice cream from friendly's.

i NEVER give money to homeless people anymore, because i've had a bad experience doing that. it actually really pisses me off - constantly being approached and begged at, whenever i walk on a certain street near the city. it's like a fucking fee just to walk their turf.
i have given a homeless woman down there food before, but i won't ever give them money again.

my family was pretty poor growing up, and now i have a poor man's mentality when it comes to money. my dad used to say "we can't donate to poor people...we ARE poor people."

that's selfish i know. i'm sure we, and especially i, could afford to donate money if we wanted to.

Yes donating resources and time to the community is sooooo important. I get such a rush from it.

I donate clothing and other goods to GoodWill (and I've taken them personally to people I know are in need). I usually do a clean sweep of my house and rid unnecessary things that I am keeping senselessly and give them to others who need them, or I've also bought new items to give in the past.

I have several friends who are in bad shape financially, and I buy their kids things regularly. A couple months ago I purchased $200 worth of food and dry goods from Wal-Mart online and had it shipped to my friends home out of state. He is having a difficult time taking care of his family.

I've volunteered in San Diego to clean up graffiti downtown. I've fed the homeless down there, its crazy how many homeless people there are in SD. When I say fed the homeless, I walked on foot with bags of food and a couple volunteers giving it out and talking to people.

In New York, I donate time to TNR. Trapping, Neutering, and Releasing feral cats; part of the process is making sure they are clean and healthy upon release (disease free). I think this is super important because in NYC we have a huge population of stray cats that coexist with domesticated indoor/outdoor cats. Keeping all the animals healthy is necessary to keep humans healthy as well. Sounds kind of like a random crazy thing to be interested in but I found my sweet little baby kitty outside the 2nd week I was in New York City, so its relevant to me.

My mother and I used to make baked goods for the homeless when we lived in Virginia. Another thing she does is she volunteers her time (she's a Dentist) at under privileged schools in San Diego. I've gone with her to teach children how to brush their teeth, and take interest in oral health. Explaining that sugar buggies and germs are bad for their teeth and giving out free goods.

I think its so important to share and help people, if you're not doing it you are missing out!
