I still pay bills in the actual bank building, and not online. I still use a flint-and-fluid Zippo lighter to make fire. I still wear fingerless leather gloves, despite the fad having died 30 years ago. I still use a paper map and an analogue compass to find my way around in new places, instead of GPS.

Oh yeah, and this! My beloved wrist watch is a tried and true Casio. Currently running its 11th year on the factory-installed battery. There's a reason why they're still in the business despite the smart watch fad.

The Bronx is a pitiful place, but me thinks he exaggerates... I have been through there. All cities have bad parts.

I look for the beauty in places, not the opposite. That makes me an old fart I suppose.

    Oh my.
I hate that so many historic buildings are rased to the ground.

These were burnt to the ground, sometimes, with homeless squatters inside, which is why they're surrounded by rubble nobody even bothered to haul away.

Only Dorothy and Toto believe NYC doesn't have its dark side. The south Bronx is merely one neighborhood that someone will eventually buy and use to produce skyscrapers for the rich and famous. Chicago is now widely considered a war zone, while LA is Mars. Huston, has always been for cowboys from Mars. Mexico City is over 30 million people, while the entire population of Finland is only five million.

almost everything we have any more was "new fangled" in my life time. half of it the stuff of science fiction.
which is mostly fun for me, when i can afford it. so i'm not being "retro" intentionally, but new tech just to be having new tech, is just beyond what i can afford.

cell phones are a pain though, as i'm not that social and for me they're mostly for exploring places on the net while waiting for a bus,
but they always need to be fed money or juice, sometimes when they can't be, so there goes another one.

i'd much rather have my own landline then be dependent on landlords providing wifi. 3rd world countries started building cell towers because that was cheaper then stringing landlines,
and now, half the first world, and all of it if you're not well off, cell service is all you can get. i want optical fiber to my modem, but that don't look very much likely to happen.

Because mobile (cell) phones are now so popular, public payphones are less common than they used to be. I would rather call on a mobile phone than a payphone any day. Landlines where I am cost more than my phone mobile and internet is extra. I get 20GB of data with my phone a month. With landline people can tell when you are not at home.

If they're expensive shoes it's worth it. None of my shoes are worth repairing, when they wear out I toss them and replace them.

I generally just wear sneakers, when I wear them out nothing is salvageable. Except my feet lol.

So what do you do for internet access? Where I am only NBN and 4G are available. Things might be different where you are, but where I am it costs more to rent a landline than my mobile phone that comes with 20GB of data a month.

i'm still into paper maps, although i like google maps and satalite view too.
gps is, well if i had a car i'd have that too, but none of those apps that use it to rout your trip.
even roads can change since the last time they were updated, leading to rediculous, sometimes even dangerous results.

i like my books and hobby and sciffy 'zenes on paper.
have yet to get one of those things to read books on line,
that are supposed to be easier on your eyes then trying to do so on the computer.

but the price of books anymore, i have to wonder if trees are made out of gold.
(though i do understand we've been wasting way too many of them)

    I do like maps.

    I have a BIG collection :)

Google maps does show traffic and recent stoppages along the roads, which a map doesn't do...

I have been reading books on a tablet for many years now, I was one of the first to latch onto it.

I can't say it is easier on your eyes. Computer screens flicker a bit... I prefer a tablet as the size of the page is similar to a page in a printed book.

If set to 'night' mode where the background is black and the words white I see it way better, and it is less stressful on my eyes. I read about two book titles a week. Not a huge consumer of recent books, I prefer the bargain bin offerings and have found countless hours of entertainment for free this way. Even Amazon has a selection of "free" kindle books.

When I was living in Europe I started this, as to buy a book in English when over seas is costly. I'd rather spend the money on entrance to a museum or a canal boat ride.
