If we say sexuality is defined at birth, that leads to the concept of 1 month old babies already having a defined sexuality, sounds kind of ridiculous to me

Even if that was the case, what is sexuality as seen through the eyes of a 1 month old?, at that stage you are tripping off your head on all the chemicals that put your brain together so it might be just about being in the presence of someone that makes you feel safe. Who's to say thats not what makes you gay?, that in that first month daddy was around a lot more than mum, or vice-versa, or you didnt like the way mum smelt.

And if it is, how on earth is anyone going to research that? Monitor every second of a couple hundred new borns lives then wait 40 years to see how many of them end up owning a Madonna CD?

Quite possible that we may never know the answer to "What makes someone Gay?" in it's entirity, especially if its impossible to observe or measure the cause. It might be impossible if the answer relies on getting into the head of a child that hasnt learned to communicate yet

Well, I am quite intrigued in the "It's nature's way of stemming over-population" theory. ;P

I profess to be bi. I was pretty much het in my developing years, chased after a lot of pussy, the usual young guy stuff.

Then, while in the service, reading an article in Playboy magazine about the gay scene on Fire Island I became intrigued with the concept. I started thinking that I could enjoy affection with a man.

A few years later, around 1969 in the safe counter culture environment in New Orleans, I took a guy up on his invite and tried sex with a man. Sex is sex - it feels good and whether sweating with a woman or a man it is the same. So, I officially became bi and did girls and guys thereafter.

Now, the question is which way was I born? IDK. Men who are thrown together, on ships or prisons have always been able to make out with other men. Whole cultures of men like the ancient Greeks, especially the Spartans were bisexual because it was accepted and expected as part of adolescent training. This kind of indicates that sex is mutable, that we can be whatever and do anything that moves if we so desire, or if everyone says it is alright.

Some of us perhaps are more inclined to do our own gender and others may be into opposite gender. I think a lot of the aversion one way or the other is cultural. Altho I have always been sexually curious and remember even as a child playing with guys.

AFTER living with a guy for five years, I lived the next 18 with a woman and we had wonderful screaming sex. I only played around with a couple guys in that time - was for the most part het.

So, did I answer the question? Probably just made more questions.

I think they sums up everything I was going to say. I never believed I just was, but I don't believe I chose to- I feel the traits were there, and emphasized over time.

But then I feel you chose your label, I associate myself with being exclusively gay, however I know an attractive girl when I see one, no questions asked.

Tell her it's developmental, something in your early upbringing which made you gay but which you couldn't realistically be expected to apologise for.

I mean, it puts the blame on her, and that's the important thing. :)

This is basically what I've come to believe. So many gay people seem to have startlingly similar upbringings, despite quite coming from different totally different backgrounds and genetic stock. It seems too much to be coincidence, to me. The genetic angle I sort of get, but then, I would think that it would lead to less gay people (as homosexuality is more accepted and less gays pass on their genes for the sake of appearences), which isn't really borne out.

Yup, I pretty much believe I was destined for gayness from the moment I popped out of my mother.

"Gay" as we know it today is a fairly modern construct. Only really started to get investigated from the 1970s. Humans still know diddly squat about the brain, we know parts of the brain in gay people are different, no idea why, not entirely sure what those parts are for, Might be another 50 yrs before we even get a hint of where the answer lies

Genetics - Pffft!, Sexuality in humans has as much to do with how much attention your getting from certain subsets of the population as it does anything else. If you go through life as a petite effeminate guy with a girlie voice, your simply going to get a lot more guys making eyes at you than if you are an average Joe and no girls ever really going to take you seriously, a girl starting up something with a guy everyone else thinks is gay is going to have other girls whispering in her ear.

Most researchers would be straight, to study gay, you'd first have to identify it. The stereotype is easy; guys chasing after guys closest to girls. The other side of the coin guys chasing after guys furthest away from girls - It's like its programmed into straight people not to even think about, too scary. Plus,To get the whole picture you'd need to research secret bi Married guy, good luck with that

Anyway, rant over....Genes?, I'd prefer to blame everyone else ;)

I think you might be born with a pre-disposition to be either gay or straight, and it's that coupled with your environment/upbringing which decides wether you're gay or not. There's a lot to be said about a child's sexual developement.

Yes, I know I was born gay, because I found myself looking at other males instead of females when I was about 10 or 11 years old and thinking about how sexy they were, especially if they were wearing shorts, because I'm a "legs guy", but believe it or not, dress slacks, like that of a business suit, make a guy look hot also. I love sexy legs.

I knew I was gay even before I knew what gay was.
I would watch tv shows and be looking at the guys on the shows. I had a friend we were both 12 and we would find a lot of time to be alone ;)
So I would say I was born gay.

You know, when I was a pre-pubescent kid, I was enamored of certain men. One movie star, I think Robert Cummings (appropriate name for when I got older :p) gave me these weird feelings whenever I saw him on screen. He just was sooo good looking.

I also had fantasies about a male fourth grade teacher, so I guess the inclination was there.

I really do think you're astonishingly blinkered if you truly believe this.

Pretty much every post you make on this subject seems to decry conventional notions of sexuality for being based on research that isn't (and can't be) 100% accurate and complete, while at the same time espousing your own theories which are based on far less actual data/research.

You can't deny one idea based on uncertainty, while using the same uncertainty to support an idea you happen to favour.

Which idea am I denying? That we might be born gay? What is gay? What actually is it we are born with?

As for research, you still dont believe there are things we may never be able to research? How exactly would one research Married secret bi guy?

Well that was exactly my point. So it would be foolish to try and base any idea on something that we know we don't have any insight into.

And the "what is gay" thing is just diversionary. It doesn't affect anything.

I'm probably speaking for everyone here that we don't hate to look at womans "pieces", but we just aren't interested. It's like a arm, or a leg. Nothing special.
