I used to, but not anymore. I've given up, lol.

I think that it's less important to me now as there's just nothing to hide, but I recognize that there are those who will infringe on one's privacy that way. I actually don't even have a cam on my laptop right now, so it's a non-issue for me at the moment.

Years ago, on the old IRC Dalnet, I was a channel op and another op was telling me how she hooked up a camera to her Win95 pc when a voice came over her speakers saying: "Take your top off!". Suddenly realizing that "This damned thing is ON!" she started yanking wires as she peered over the desktop from below and realized the guy speaking to her was "saluting", and quite vigorously (his camera was mounted under the desk). I didn't catch the rest of her story, as I was on the floor laughing so hard I couldn't hear her over my own cackling. I later found out that she'd managed to figure out the camera enough to avoid future embarrassment, though. Fun times.

One never knows what kinds of people one will meet online. First-class entertainment, if you ask me. I kept a bandaid over my netbook camera for a long time. Other hackers I know opened it up and installed mini-dip switches to turn various hacks on/off via the power line. This, in my opinion, is the ONLY secure way to do mic & camera security. An LED can be placed in the line to show when power is active to these devices. I'd make it a blinking one to grab attention.

A Few Months Ago I Received A Disturbing Email That Appeared To Be Sent From My Email

Address.......It Said That They Had Noted That I Had Been Visiting Porn Sites And That They

Had Been Watching Me Through My Computer Camera.......And That I Had Been Performing

Certain Acts On Myself...:yum:....They Then Went On To Request An Odd Amount Of Money......

$177.00 Or The Pics Would Be Fowarded To All Email Addresses In My Computer....:worried:.

I Had 55 Days To Transfer The Money.

I Don't Have A Camera In My Computer So No Worries There......But It Does Concern Me

As To How They Sent The Email From What Appeared To Be My Account.

They Even Drew Attention To The Fact.

Any Thoughts Or Experiences On This Type Of Blackmail Request.....???

    Cheers Glen.

No, but I did find this online. Note at the bottom the article specifically mentions Australia.

The latest trick up cybercriminal's sleeves is a ploy utilizing a mix of social engineering and blackmail, a scam via email from someone claiming to have hacked your computer's webcam and recorded your activities while you allegedly watched porn.

The email claims you downloaded their virus while watching porn, siphoning your contacts, and they threaten to send the video of you to all of your friends, family and coworkers — unless you pay a ransom in Bitcoin (BTC) digital currency. (We've seen demands of anywhere between $300 to $3,000 USD or higher.)

Although such schemes have been widespread in various parts of the world — Australia and the Middle East — we have recently seen these showing up in large numbers across the United States.

last year everyone at my work got that a bunch of times.

i'm not sure how they disguise their email address, but it's a pretty common trick.

Gotta admit I've put a piece of black tape over what looks like the little camera hole (assuming that's what that little pin hole thingie is). I often use the pc while in the nude or under-dressed so i don't want to take the chance of showing more than I intend, because knowing me I'd hit some random button and start streaming video of myself to all who care to see. I'm clumsy with technology so I have to be a little paranoid.

You should probably know that clear tape acts a prescription when put in front of photo lens and now you become clearer and slightly zoomed in when you're picking your nose. :p

my mom cracked the camera lens on her last phone and put some clear tape to hold it in place. you would actually be surprised at how little difference it made in any way. pictures looked the same, except they appeared to be slightly lower resolution. like the camera was from a phone 5 years older than it actually was.
