Was that study based on people who ate conventional, factory-farmed meat, or organic meat from small family farms? There is a pretty huge difference between the two, yet vegetarians like to lump all meat together.
Diet's something people seem to make seem hard because few people have self control. Cook your own food and you'll can eat healthy pretty easy.
If you read the article it was mostly from heart disease, which has been known for a long time to be more prevalent in people who eat a lot of red meat. For a long time everyone thought it was mostly too much cholesterol, which is a problem, but why it's been shown to affect people who eat too much red meat is still up for debate but... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/08/l-carnitine-heart-disease-red-meat-compound_n_3037372.html It's interesting to note. Anyway, most diet isn't that hard. Cook your own food and eat balanced meals.

I'm not veg, but I always make a day (or two) during the week when I don't eat any meat whatsoever. I know both healthy veg and unhealthy veg friends. My roommate was veg and she was skinny looking but healthy, only now she started eating fish. I personally don't care why people go veg, it's better for our planet if they do, and most of them do it because of personal beliefs (which are their own anyway) or they do it for health reasons (which is totally cool they wanna try eating differently too). My sister is mostly veg (she eats poultry and fish) and she's pregant - the doctor had no health concerns whatsoever over her diet.
