Which is funny, because it pretty much describes you to a tee - a white guy who spent his life enjoying privilege and cannot engage with the issue enough to realize it. Instead you react with denial and anger.

Which is especially funny, because you're convinced that you are somehow the victim of of a global economic elite while being completely unwilling to admit that others could possibly be victims of society.

The level of cognitive dissonance is mind-boggling.

How the fuck would you know if I've enjoyed privilege? You don't know me.

    Cognitive dissonance? Oh, the irony.

i'm glad the cultural identity part is in there. if it was just about hair and shit we'd be talking about dingleberries. and nobody needs to talk about that.

How can we honestly answer this question?

    Who here is non-white?

That's the only answer I'd begin to entertain, and even then it would only be that non-white person's opinion vs the opinion of alot of non-whites.

The vast majority of African Americans don’t care if you wear dreads just as long as it truly represents who you are inside, and not just some guy saying “everyone look at me, I’m white, but I can wear dreads”

That's cool but you really don't know what the vast amount of African Americans think about it; do you?

I wouldn't dare to speak for the vast majority of "my people". People are so varied.

    Really!?

No. I am so frequently embarrassed by White America. I don't want to try to claim I understand anything about lots of them.

I am Brown and I have no idea about Black and White people issues. All I want is to look as fair as possible. A brown person will never want to look dark. Here in India white skin is equivalent to high status and just everybody wants to look fair and white.

My daughter-in-law is Brown Puerto Rican. She is proud to be who and what she is. I'm sorry you feel like you need to be other than what you are.

Of course there are many different voices and opinions within the African American community, but there’s also a shared knowledge, a common experience that’s difficult to explain or quantify

    Alright my $0.02.

About the whole misappropriation of race thing. I find wiggers more offensive. The fact is that it is to me based on a racist stereotype propagated by BET (or as Chuck D calls it "Bitches 'N Thugs TV) and MTV. While I'm on the subject I'm going to throw a couple of stones at the gay community. "Don't take LOGO as an honor. MTV raped the black culture and they will rape yours too!"

But back to my original rant. Most of the white who kids emulate hip hop culture emulate a negative racial stereotype that networks like BET and MTV exploit that is a narrow view of black culture. The way they dress, speak and act represents this stereotype compounded by the fact that they have little to no connection to what they are emulating. Think of it as a propagandized National Geographic Special.

On the hippie side there are "Trustafarians" white guys who emulate the rasta culture while living on their trust fund. Still ridiculous.

I have dreads. I look like Rob Zombies hippie brother. I have my dreads and like onlygoodvibes mine have there own signifigance. If asked I will tell them.

On another side of this. It looks like the woman is trying to impress the light skinned black man next to her. From my discussions with black friends a lot of light skinned blacks seem to have this complex about not being "Black" enough. Yet the only time whites have this discussion it is because they wear hoods.

    Ok rant over.

I would. If they disagree they are wrong :-D

JK of course, it is just that 'my people' are not restricted to a particular brand of people.... So I would only 'dare to speak for' the majority of my people in cases where I know I make sense and its based on something, and would speak hypothetically or throw in a 'it seems to me' :p when less certain.

    Nevermind I guess! :p

The thing is that I am "White" yet if I get enough time in the sun people automatically start talking Spanish to me or asking if I speak Farsi (especially people who speak Farsi). I even got that without dreads. So whether or not I have "White Privilege" I don't really know. The thing about people and their prejudices and stereotypes is that they are mostly based on appearances. The problem I have isn't the Latinos who want to speak Spanish to me or the Middle Easterners who want to speak Farsi with me. It is with the white people who view all Latinos as "Rapists and Murderers, who are here to steal our jobs" and all Middle Easterners "Are Muslims who hate America and our freedom who want to kill as many Americans as possible" because I look just enough Latino and Middle Eastern that they don't give a fuck about how "White" I am. It is kind of like violent homophobes. They really don't give a shit if who they are beating up is really gay or not they only give a fuck if they think they are gay.

The irony in that girl's comments about "appropriating" culture is she's speaking what's essentially a "white" language, wearing "white people" clothes and not a dashiki, teased her hair into long "white people" curls instead of growing an Afro or dreads, attends an education system established and run by "white people", and is pretending to be a victim of what? Micro-Aggressions? Which are definitely a construct of so-called "white intellectuals"

She needs to either move to Africa and adopt African culture, or come to the realization that she's an American and therefore a product of American culture. My family is from Ireland but I don't whine about "The troubles" or get offended when I see a black person eating potatoes.

But then again, American Universities are hardly the bastions of free speech or tolerance they used to be.
