this is like when everyone got all butt-hurt that white people were covering beyonce's or rihanna's new songs about black empowerment. (like where you mix that creole with that negro and get a texas bama. what a brilliant cultural genius) apparently that was cultural theft or whatever.

imagine if people got mad at a black guy for covering a rock and roll or country music song? heeeey! that's our culture! you can't do that! way to sound like a bunch of fucking two year olds. didn't you learn to share?

i would say that the opposite is true. you said that white people with dreads are considered "hippies" or something and that a potential employer would overlook that. maybe they would think they are a dirty, lazy, pot-smoking hippie. i'm thinking that is more closely in-line with what the corporate world would think about hippies or white people with dreads.

alternatively, a black person with dreads is seen as more "culturally normal" (maybe it's his religion), so an employer could be more likely to accept it.

not trying to deny that there is white privilege though.

that would be pretty excessive. if we are all gonna bitch about people getting overly offended, this would just be another instance of that. if the dude can't shake off getting harassed by some skinny bitch, and he needs to call the cops and SUE her...he's taking it a little too far.

 

I think the notion of white privilege is ludicrous as it is pushed mostly by white liberals who like to foment racial divide as a means to placate their own egos and promote a political agenda. I mean, I don't see any poor white kids getting college scholarships just for being white and graduating high school with a C average. White people cannot celebrate their heritage without being called "racist," but I see things all the time which celebrate black heritage. My girlfriend was watching this crap on TV a few nights ago called "Black Girls Rock." I believe it was on the BET channel. It was some sort of awards show, and go figure that pandering parade float Hillary RODham Clinton made an appearance to pretend she gives a shit about the people she most exploits for her own political gain. Just imagine there was a White Entertainment Channel, and a show called "White Girls Rock," All hell would break loose. So no, I think it's complete bullshit, and I think Louis CK is full of shit in this clip and is simply spewing cliches to appeal to people with certain indoctrinated beliefs that are in line with a certain political stance.

The notion of white privilege is actually used to keep black people oppressed by creating a victim mentality. That's why people like the aforementioned HRC resort to that kind of rhetoric so often. It's like "vote for me and I will give you everything you want because you have been oppressed and are unable to help yourselves."

I do not think I would have been treated any worse when I was arrested had I been black. In my instance I could have only been treated better. In some areas black people would fare much better in such a circumstance. I know in the city they have bigger fish to fry, and if they pull over a car of black dudes who are smoking weed, they usually let them go since there is usually much bigger things to deal with (shootings, stabbings, armed robberies, etc). I know because I have witnessed it firsthand. Had the same thing happened in the suburbs with a bunch of white dudes, they would all be asked to step out of the vehicle and do a field sobriety test.

I have read/ heard multiple non-whites complain about white people having dreads. They are upset, because apparently, it's their way of dealing with their curly hair, but they are told it's unprofessional, or "gang culture", and they are sometimes not allowed to wear it to jobs or to work. I've heard of people getting upset because we choose to have dreads when our hair is easy to take care of.
I think it's ridiculous, and that people should be allowed to do what they want with their hair. Obviously, there are limits in a professional setting, but if cornrows or dreads is neatly or professionally done, they should be considered fine. The fact that they aren't is the problem.
I actually think that people should wear what they want, regardless if it is popular in another culture or not, so long as they are not doing it in an offensive manner. Just wearing dreads is not offensive. I'd elaborate more on what I think this means, but it's two am and my brain barely works.
People are way too easily offended. They are literally getting offended by hair.

Assuming this video wasn't staged, both these people handled things badly. The kid should have just kept walking, as I would do if some crazy person accosted me on the street. And the woman should have realized this was just a kid (or young adult or whatever). Kids like to experiment with their appearance, in a year or two the dreads will be gone. He wasn't being disrespectful or anything. Also, isn't imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

 

1) maybe that's because you didn't go to college i work at one and was involved with a program for low-income or first generation college students, several of whom were white. so yeah, that actually does happen.

2) basically every other channel on TV is white entertainment. think of 90% of all sitcoms or TV shows - they star predominately white actors.
when white people get upset about shit like BET...they sound like a bunch of cry babies. it's so ridiculous when people whine about black people complaining about being black...by complaining about being white! black people shouldn't be upset about racism, but if they are...i'm gonna complain about how hard it is to be a white guy? :dizzy2:

Did they make you lay down you on the asphalt, PR? I'm really wondering, as I see this is a regular practice for american cops who are dealing with faulty drivers (not criminals). Which is a complete no go in my country. Even if the marijuana clouds would swirm out my car window they would still treat me as a normal citizen (unless I would act really dubiously or would flip or become agressive) and not put me against the car with my hands in the air or neck etc. I understand, different country = different rules and practices but still I always found that remarkable.

How is porkstock pushing the race issue exactly, 6-eyed? Isn't that just your perception of anybody who acknowledges white privilege is a real thing (not actively, all the time but just by giving his opinion in this thread).

 

Yeah, it always surprises me how American cops act with minor offenses, they seem to have a warzone mentality about their own cities.

 

Maybe it's a precaution because people can and obviously also actually are carrying guns more often there?

sadly even though I hate the term and notion, a large majority of folks are sheep led by a nose-ring attached to media.

So what we see is a backlash against the progress media has made with the now ludicrous loud-mouth, far right morons with $$$ stirring up less educated groups.
We need to continue to make it a non-issue in as many venues as possible and eventually the sheep with follow the lead.

Star Trek gave the TV world it's first inter-racial kiss, and even though there was a brief uproar and they got threats and all that crap, the universe didn't implode and life went on. As popular media has reflected differing lifestyles and aspects of life to people in a manner that is easily accepted, those lifestyles gradually begin to be accepted overall.
Norman Lear lent a flavor to his shows that hit people square in the face with hard topics, yet in a manner that could get a message across some of even the thickest of skulls.
Like it or not, All In The Family and The Jeffersons probably did more to change attitudes in America than all the marches in '60's.

Today I am hard-pressed to think of shows that do not have some character(s) that have an alternative lifestyle. At first it was trendy and lame.
The show "Helen" is a perfect example of asinine response because rather than Helen merely being a gay character, the show centered on her sexual preference and that was the central solitary theme, and it failed at everything it attempted to accomplish.
but now alternate lifestyles are integrated into shows in a realistic and organic manner and in that way the sheeple can see "the gays" are not going to brainwash America's children and sell them into homosexual slavery.

SO at the very least we can take some comfort in knowing that as long as the Jews and Homos control all the media in America, the homophobic, White Supremacist, Nazi mentality will only be found on FAUX (we make up our own)NEWS and similar radical media outlets and not poison our beloved sit-coms.

It is amazing to me, a mere observer on this awesome show "Life on Earth", the ludicrous dichotomies that people construct all in the name of "preserving the tribe",

This thread was originally about dreadlocks on Caucasians and it quickly devolved into racial double standards (white privilege is merely a form of racial double standards). Why continue to find a need to argue about it if you agree with a celebrity who says the best way to end racism is to not push racial issues? I also happen to agree with Morgan Freeman btw.

White priviledge can be illustrated with facts (higher rate of incarciration for blacks for one) but i want to illustrate a real life example

Im posting from my phone so i cant link it but there is a video making the internet rounds of a black man walking to pick up his kids and he is stopped by police and accused of loitering,. He continuously tells them he didnt do anything wrong, he is just trying to pick up his kids, is eventually slammed to the ground and handcuffed, he starts screaming for someone to help him in a panicked voice, the usual

Now the obvious takeaway from this ismost of us should be aware that as white people we dont really have to worry about being stopped and taken into police custody for absolutely no fucking reason. That is white priviledge.

But what really struck me was he was on his way to get his kids. My child's daycare calls social services to come pick up your kid if youre not there by the time they close. This is all hypothetical on my part but what if DSS was called when the guy didnt show up for his kids. Of course when DSS learns it was because he was in police custody they'll be sure to do a follow up visit and the guy could risk losing his kids. Not to mention what happens if he misses any work while in police custody. All this could happen because he is a black dude who did absolutely nothing wrong

America lived under apartheid for 100 years. The legacy of that doesnt just go away overnight.

 

But anywho - about dreadlocks. I'm not convinced a white person with dreadlocks has an easier time getting a job than a black person with dreads (except maybe at Mellow Mushroom)
because white people with dreads are regarded as dirty hippies which is a cardinal sin in the corporate world.
