MSN According to the article, AMD has figured out how to easily adapt games to your computer, to allow the gpu to do whatever it wants, and not always be slaved to the damned cpu all the time. In other words, AMD and Microsoft have figured out how to actually multiplex your cpu and gpu for the specific game, with impressive gains. Other recent advances like this are "suddenly" coming out, just as people "suddenly" find all sorts of ways to cut the demand for both AI and gaming in half, and one researcher found a potential way to double the performance of every existing computer, just by multiplexing the damn thing. All of which is a fairy tale, told by an idiot, the sound and the fury, with the leading companies leading everyone on a merry chase. At the rate they're going, within ten years you'll have a star trek holodeck on a laptop, and everyone's still messing around with attempting to create Frankenstein's monster, but it requires more electricity than a nuclear reactor! Its just insane, really, truly insane, that we are creating all these super expensive electrical pigs, not because we have to but, its the way to gouge the market for more cash. Generally, the hardware is twice as powerful as the software, because the software has to be written for the hardware, but the AI are stomping on everyone's illusions about what's coming next.
Anything that saves electric is a good thing. I think AI in general is way overhyped, except for specific applications. The resources need just to create a stupid image not to mention a big application, are completely unnecessary and generally of no use to the world, except as you say to bring in more money.
The west is counting on the fact the Pentagon is twenty years ahead of everyone, so they can dole out antiquated technology at inflated prices. Google's AI recently crunched the numbers for a rather large number of materials with exotic quantum properties while, between Intel and Darpa, the US dominates materials technology worldwide. My own work indicates that everything is self-organizing and, if you know the rules of self-organization that applies to everything, you can crunch the numbers on a laptop. Its related to the Four Root Metaphors, that laboratories worldwide have been looking for, but the mathematicians are starting to catch on.
True, but information being more fundamental than energy, makes it possible to literally generate electricity using just information, so you can eat your French Fries.
Wait, so that means all those AIs crunching numbers and data should be generating energy instead of consuming more than many countries, no? And I should be able to run my entire house from my cellphone since it contains a whole lotta info...
Using a Maxwell's Demon, you can theoretically heat and cool your entire house, for free, without ever requiring electricity. Nature being self-organizing makes total nonsense out of modern physics, as still stuck on ancient Greek ideas. Inhabiting a Singularity, means everything in the universe can be thought of as simultaneously exploding and imploding, information and noise, geometry and dynamics, that are universal, and express four root metaphors, describing how space and time exchange identities, in ways which are humanly inconceivable. Its easy enough to think of it as everything being self-organizing, and obeying a single default self-organizing system, the truth.
