Oh well, that's all right then.

But do you also remember that her policies resulted in 3 million unemployed, the sale of public housing stock (one of the seeds of today's housing problems),the sale of public utilities (why I now pay my water bills to a French company and ride local transport owned by a German company), the Poll Tax, the stupid war with Argentina over some rocks we didn't even know we owned, allowing US nuclear arms to be stationed on British soil (making us a target), allowing Regan to bomb Libya from British soil (making us a target), the fact only recently come to light that she seriously considered setting cities like Liverpool, and probably others, adrift to fall apart.

And if she smashed the unions, it now means we have no unions with teeth, which is why her political children can send people on Workfare to work for no pay at places like Tesco or Poundland.

The unions may have needed reform, but they were the only thing standing between us and mass exploitation...which is what we have now. As she herself said, there's no such thing as society, just individuals. And as individuals, we're easy to pick off, one by one.

All this is the legacy of Thatcher. Was any of it what you had in mind when you voted for her ?

this tends to be pretty far down the list of grievances after privatisation and general betrayal of the post war understanding, the falklands war, no milk for schoolkids, the demonisation of public sector workers, destruction of local democracy in favour of centralised government and selected quango's, erosion of civil liberties, attempting to limit freedom of the press (except or the press that supported her), etc.

    but also, lest we forget.

    section fucking 28.

can't we just throw her body down a disused mine shaft?

Spoilt for choice, considering what she did to the mining industry. They're nearly all disused now.

Yeah, as much as I hated what Thatcher & her gang did to our Pits, our communities and to the many folk who could not defend themselves I cannot find hate within myself for her now . I was a Durham Miner , I was at the Trafalgar Square Anti Poll Tax Rally . It was a long time ago, lets just move on. RIP Maggie .

Disagree - people shouldn't be allowed to forget. Not least because we now find ourselves back to square one with the current regime, and it looks like we're going to have to start all over again. That's because too many people forgot.

The BBC is reporting street parties/celebrations in several cities... when did that last happen at the death of a political person ? The scars she inflicted still haven't healed totally.

The demise of unionism is something that happened right across the first world. If you had a more socialist PM and government at the time that didnt break the strangehold the unions have, you would be all far worse off. Those in the news in Brixton celebrating her death would be worse off and low income slums like that would be far bigger in size with bigger problems: see France.

Give more power to unions and it doesnt translate to helping the little people. Just a whole lot of fatcats sitting around with a jobs for the boys mentality. As someone else mentioned she got voted in and stayed for three terms at least in part cos everyone else was sick of it, the rest of the country anyway it seems.

As for the manufacturing industry, again same symptons across all the first world, doesnt matter what goverment policy is, cant compete with China

As for Mining, thats all just about grades of metal and how many grams per tonne you are getting when you dig it up, again doesnt matter what government policy is if its going to cost twice as much to get half as much there as other places. You cant compete with the Scandanavian countries, sorry Australia and it now seems Siberia

I agree with you on selling off utilities and public transport, its something that doesnt seem to have worked anywhere.

We had a global recession a few years back arguably we are still in it. The UK and Germany faired a lot better than the rest of the EU, better than America really. You still have the same kind of policies around as in Thatchers day.

Socialist policies for the basics; healthcare, education, utilities and transport, welfare. Capitalism for everything else which includes limiting unionism. This is the formula all the countries that are doing the best have, UK, Germany, the Scandanavian countries, US, Canada

In terms of being a PM, I think she was your greatest after Churchill

In terms of womens lib, if you go back through history you'll find a few female heads of state that were there through royalty or as a result of being a widower that took on a Prime Ministers function. But Thatcher was the first female to rise to power threw her own awesomeness, made every guy around her look like a complete pussy. Once the world saw that, fair enough, chics can run countries. Did seem to be a noticeable jump in female world leaders after 1990. With womens lib, one of the most important people in history really. All Germaine Greer ever did was sit around and whine about everything.

Popping bottles of champagne and dancing to reggae in the streets celebrating her death is totally fucked. I'm surprised they didnt start more riots and flog a bunch of flatscreen TVs

It may be distasteful to celebrate someone's death, and maybe Thatcher should have thought of that when we were all supposed to celebrate the sinking of the Belgrano, or the deaths of Argentine conscript kids during her 'election' war.

Perhaps you do...but you're in Austrailia.

I'm here, in a city that has never totally recovered from her policies.

And dont you think the fact that ordinary British people have been celebrating, even after all this time, might tell you something about how her policies affected everyday life for so many ?

You needed to have been there and lived through it. I did. That's why I celebrate.
