I just wanted to say I unintentionally thumbs downed Heat's post. I meant to thumbs it up. One thing I can say is that the health craze is often fueled by self hatred. As for gaining weight, eating a high carb, high calorie, low fat diet worked for me and has been easy to maintain. I ate a high fat diet for many years and instead of gaining weight, I lost, felt weak and exhausted and got very sick. I've been up and down. I don't go around hating others who aren't where I am on their journey. Compassion has gone a long way in helping me to help others. That and open mindedness.
    Forgive me for typos

It doesn't seem to matter whether I eat meat or not, I have done both and my weight has never changed. But I feel more unhealthy when I eat meat.

I'm thinking protein powder might be the way to go. I have been working out a lot and hopefully this will eventually make me feel hungrier as well.

The biggest expenditure that is not cost effective is that 70% of people who die do so in a full care hospital. That is due to lack of funding for facilities that could instead care for patients at far less cost than in a hospital. The population is aging and with that comes a statistical curve that was not planned for effectively.

People are housed in hospitals here as there are not enough facilities for them, that includes those with mental disabilities, eating disorders, cognitive issues and many other ailments that are not ones which should be cared for in a full service facility.

Home care costs are far more in line and yet funding to those programs has not increased as the demand has. There are not enough support staff to handle need.

Some interesting information on this site that does not support your numbers if you are interested.

There have been really excellent suggestions given.

I had a really hard time gaining after treatments and still have problems with retaining weight. I have to eat smaller amounts but I make sure I eat often so that I can maintain a healthy weight. You might also want to try a really simple thing like change the size of your plate.

Use a bigger plate but only increase your intake by a small amount at a time, it is less overwhelming as it does not appear like a larger amount of food. It is one idea given to me and it did help me.

Errr, well that link kind of does back up what I was saying. I mean I left out things link dental, public liability insurance, litigation and diagnostics.

Article does say US is the only OECD country where outpatient cost are more than inpatient costs, and does go onto obesity here:

Nothing in that article really goes against what I said, that most of the costs are for the aged and diet related, and those costs are rising.

Yes some of those indirectly related costs in the US system skew figures - dental, malpractice suits, higher incomes ,far higher costs of diagnosis. So yes technically you are right...their biggest costs seem to be over inflated prices for, well everything.

But everywhere else, yes it is old and fat people

I've reached this conclusion by being witness to countless people working through their health issues, struggling with different approaches and trying to find balance between the mental/emotional, physical/physiological and lifestyle/societal aspects of one's health. Also through watching teachers and sometimes leading and being a teacher myself, in helping people through old belief systems and traumas that were hidden beneath the external health issues.

In other words, getting at the cause or genesis of bad health. It is often a matter of upbringing and deep-held psychological conditioning. Or just plain low self-esteem. Eating disorders aren't just the ones that are called anorexia or bulimia. People have distorted views of their own bodies, self-worth and health, it may not always be because they want to be skinny or are trying to lose weight. A lot of it goes way deeper and may have been something that was picked up in early childhood.

In other words I learned by seeing and hearing lots of people showing me their emotional scars, as they peeled away layers of ill health or extra fat.

i think not eating diversely enough contributes to mental problems, but not thinking diversely enough contributes even more.

I feel better when I have a balanced diet. I already get enough dairy protein and carbs but when I consciously add fruits and veggies daily I feel better. More alert, stronger in the gym, n stuff like that
