So I'm starting to date a girl who owns a 40ft bus on her property. It hasn't been driven in 3 years and she's afraid that, because it's been sitting so long, that if she starts it now, that it will fuck up the engine and everything else.

I've been told that diesel motors do OK after sitting for a few years. And can be started up just fine. Just as long as you change the oil, charge the battery and replace the air filter.

If this is all it takes. Then I'm pretty sure I can get it started for her myself. Or will she have to hire a mechanic who does house calls?

skip the oil and air filter...better to spend the money on a fuel filter

diesels dont have vacuum lines on engine ...they have auxiliary pumps for vacuum..not needed to just run it

battery needs to be good and it will probably start just fine....worst case scenario is usually just fuel lines/pump will probably need to be primed and/or bled

fuel might be rotten too...diesel gets pretty funky ..it rots and gets moldy (more organic than gasoline)

So then diesel is relatively alright and better than fuel for the atmosphere and environment? I Always thought the opposite because you can def. smell diesel and some old 4wds have the soot and things.

I would think after Three years the fuel will be pretty useless and may even have jellified ( made that word up ) But thats what Happens to it Also the pump and Injectors will need bleeding more than likely

    it depends on the fuel

i have barrels of diesel that is over 7 years old and it burns just fine in my car

i use those paper paint strainers in the funnel though and once in a while it catches some black stuff that i imagine is probably mold but the fuel looks fine...the black stuff seems to stay in the bottom of the fuel cans too so i try not to pour out the last half litre

the irony is if you search for diesel mold on google you get pictures of weed

Thanks for the info. That's interesting as I always thought engine oil went bad after sitting for a whole year.

I'll have to take a closer look at her vacuum lines and everything else that might have corroded. Fortunately I live in a mild climate that doesn't corrode and rot cars too quickly.
