Did Affirmative Action Come Too Soon?

Discussion in 'Politics' started by Motion, Jun 3, 2005.

  1. I went to minority schools despite my whiteness, I "suffered economic descrimination" (I was one of like 33 white kids at my highschool that I spent 3 of 4 years at) does that mean that affirmative action should apply positivly to me? Should I be able to get minority scholarships? I certainly have felt like I was in the minority in times of my life, so shouldn't it be relative?

if I started a program to make it easier for only white people to get jobs I'd be crucified as a racist bastard.......

note: I don't think I should get aa in reality, it's just hypothetical, I might not even be back out of sheer absent mindedness, this is not meant to offend just to open a different perspective....

Is there a need for such a program in America? Are whites as a whole having a difficult time getting jobs because of their race?

For those who assumed that Affirmative Action was just for Blacks and other non-whites,that's not true:

" Wise also noted that white women are the biggest beneficiaries of Affirmative Action. Studies have shown that white women are continuing to make higher wages than white men in the work place."

Only when AA is in the way.

There is no need to discriminate against ANYONE.

And white women are NOT white men!

  5. was an example..... if I started a naawp I'd be crucified for instance,

    a white writers dinner

    White entertainment television

    The white entertainers awards

A college scholarship for only white americans

these things with this degree of exclusivicity exist with the word black in there and it's fine, you put white in there and you're a bigot

    I have to ask why

just ask yourself about these things, why are they okay culturally one way and not the other? Simply that that okayness, that lack of okayness must be something..... I don't have a problem with BET or Black entertainers awards or whatever, I just want to know why if a white guy does it he's a bigot

and if you say x number of years of inequity my first question will be why isn't there jewish entertainment television (which you must admit has a damn cool network badge JET), or how bout an American communist communist party entertainment television network.....

You may disagree, but most of that is an reaction to historical exclusion based on race. If America had been historically open to non-whites in these areas then those things you mentioned above probably wouldn't exist.

Why is there a BET? Because BET is an reaction to Blacks being excluded from alot of areas of tv. Yes you do see more Blacks on various TV shows(but not the leads in dramas), Tv commercials etc. But Tv is still largely white. The bulk of the starring roles on TV dramas, comedies and daytime soaps are still largely white. I watch some soap operas and they are still overwhelmingly white.

Again, don't forget that many white girls are benefiting from affirmative action also.

Even when white women benefit from AA their white husbands and family also get the benefits of the extra income that comes from the jobs they got through AA. So overall whites still recieve the most benefits from Affirmative Action in that sense.

    That's crap.

Individuals count- I'm not "overall". "Overall" American blacks benefitted from slavery. It got them out of africa, didn't it?

...and in any case, I for one have no desire to benefit from discrimination.
It was wrong then, and it's wrong now.

Jim Crow or AA? The difference is as clear as black and white.

    Well it's fairly accurate.

Part of the problem here is that too many people associate affirmative action with being a race issue only when it's also a gender issue.

Affirimative action is a great idea when practiced localy.

When we develop large goverment burecracies with oversight and the power to coherce and punish we have a problem.

Voluntary Affirmative Action sounds kind of silly, but its the best way.

I wonder if anyone here would like to speculate on a possible loss of rights if our burecrats were denied the right to collect racial profile data on everyone.

    Would minority rights suffer ?

I know full well it's a gender issue. I stated that from the beginnig.

A Legal Minority is a legal minority. Who cares thier color or sex? Special priviledge is special priviledge.

White men are not a legal minority- but that still doesn't make it ok to discriminate against them.
