It should be mentioned that most Linux is free for the taking. http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/ x
My main machine for the past 2 years has been this 1.25Mhz, 512m RAM PPC Mac Mini. It runs 24/7. I also have a 1.83Mhz 1gig RAM Macbook. Windows free for 8 years and LOVING IT.

My new machine is a fire-breathing monster. AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core Brisbane (like having two 64bit CPU's) SLI overclockers motherboard that can hold 2 PCI-E 16x video cards only 1024mb overclockers RAM 320Gb harddrive DVD burner a temprary Geforce 6600 video card. soon to be two 8800 GTS's in SLI mode running dual 19" monitors Fedora 7 x86_64 moonshine SMP kernel and XEN kernel 300+Gb allocated secondary booting winxp pro 64bit about 12Gb allocated because I dont really use it All custom built and peiced together by myself. I will be upgrading to better video cards, more RAM, and best of all, water cooling. btw, my motherboard is the G4-M57SLI-S4 which is the first to support a Linux BIOS. I can turn my computer on and unzip the kernel in 3 seconds.
This is my pc and todays test results done by PC Pitstop-I have two hard drives that total 350gb and a 20" LG monitor-The system is custom and ' very nice to look at-One side is clear plastic and there are 6 different colored lights inside and on the front. It has 4 fans that keep it cool with a digital temp gauge readout on the front. Very quite and fast. I could go faster with another gig of ram and going from DSL to cable-but it does fine for me. I can download 4 movies in 8 hours' so thats good enough. To increase the ram I would need to remove the two 500mb sticks in there now' which are new and put in two 1gb sticks-I just hate to throw out good memory.Any ideas? amd 4600+ dual core gigabyte of 800mhz ram, 1ghz FSB, 400 gb of sata goodness, and two 160 gb drives waiting to be installed once I upgrade my dissapointing 400w psu, nvidia 8500 graphics, nzxt case that looks like it consumes souls in large number to keep glowing, omnikey ultra-t keyboard, christ, there is more it's a sexy p.o.s, I am going to get a second 8500 and sli them, after I upgrade my PSU, and since I have a socket AM2, I think I will upgrade my processor too in a little bit... plus I need to get more RAM.
Mine is an old beast I custom built about 4 yrs ago.. pretty slow too, pentium3 733Mhz, 512Mb ram, on board sound/video, used to have a geforce5200 until it died on me. 60GB hard drive OS: Ubuntu linux, been winHELL free for 4+yrs I still like this old computer cuz it does what I need it to do, nothing fancy, im going to get a new video card, only cuz i miss beryl. only thing I dont like about this box is its NOISY!!! sounds like a jet engine running. Any1 know how to make it quieter? PEACE!
it's a modern workstation laptop. intel core 2 duo, 2 gigs ram etc. i find modern computers to be so boring. ms-dos, and amigas were so much funner.
my computer is a weird off white shade. the monitor is pretty small, it's got a printer and two speakers that look like mini computers. as far as all the tech stuff goes, it doesn't really amtter. it lets me use the internet with no problems and that's all i need it for.
Was running a very old Dell desktop. Optiplex GX1 which I added some ram and a DVD burner to. Still runs on Ubuntu pretty dang good. Has a whopping 10 gig harddrive and 164 MB of ram. Got a new toy though. A Dell Lattitude X300 laptop and fixing to install Ubuntu on it. Its got 640MB of ram and a Pentium M processor 1.40 gigahertz it says in the info page. Still checking it out. Got a decent deal on it through a local shop. It isn't new but it is new to me. Its got 40 gigs of space and wireless on board. I think I got my hard earned money's worth. Now it may not be a supercomputer or have lots of harddrive space but it is way better than what I have been using. It is also very light and portable. So's if I decide to travel later I won't be without my cyber fix. Which was the deciding factor. The local shop stands behind what they sell. I coulda got the same thing for the same price on Ebay. But then with shipping it woulda cost me a bit more and no fix and repair service or any gauruntee of anything. All in all so far I am happy with it. But then it has only been less than 24 hours under my fingertips. So who knows. It was recommended as a good buy by several folks on this here forum. Time will tell thats for sure. Peace, Cricket
Quieter? Actually, yes. You probably need to clean it out. Get a vacuum hose and a long brush attachment. After that you can hit it with some compressed air. Then pull out all your fans and clean them with a alcohol pad or wipe. If you pull the CPU heatsink out, make sure to clean that with 50%+ alcohol and get all the old thermal grease/compound off of it and the CPU. Then apply brand new stuff. Arctic Silver 5 is the best. If your fans are still noisy, buy some new ones. Fans for sale. Try to buy the right size fan with a really low decible rating. I could go into a lot of detail about reducing noise but we will start with this.
Nice! What motherboard do you have? It would be more beneficial for you to spend money on a Geforce 8800 and use just that alone, until you can buy another. According to experiences and tests, one 8800 will outperform two 8500's in SLI mode.

If you watch ebay closely, you can get a decent computer for a hundred bucks. Shipping included. Look for desktop computers. Time ending soonest. Bargains pop up all the time. Takes a little dedication to know what to watch for. Return policies are important too. I like to pay by money order. x
