yesterday, Oscar cat had the few of his remaining teeth removed...one had a big infection....another a big hole in it....and the two left, the vet just took. So now I have two teethless cats....Minxy had all of her teeth removed from stomatitis.......Spanky has had about 8 teeth removed......altogether....and Finnegan has all of his teeth still..... I asked why, and my vet told me that it is likely due to genetics......oral helath..... Champy pug had a few of his teeth removed...... and this is getting insane with costs, as well... growing up and having cats....I never heard about cats and dogs having to have teeth removed....... what is going on these days?
On the windowsill tonight taking turns....3 of my 4 cats....Finnegan is the tiger.......he is the grumpy bully brat to all of the other cats....but reads my mind, and has the prettiest melon green eyes I have ever seen on a cat...Spanky is the orange and white one who is the social butterfuly that makes friends with everyone and adopts everyone he meets....and Minxy, the little beige orangy female who is so small still, and she is already almost 2......but she is the livewire....Oscar was still recovering from his ordeal yesterday tonight and he does not jump up too much.....anyway....
How old are they? I have an 11 year old who has some missing teeth also. She won't even attempt to eat dry food, hasn't for well over a year. She gets canned food mixed with some water...catfood soup.
They told me oscar is 12 at the vets this week...hard to believe....Spanky must be 12 also...got him the same year....Finnegan must be 11...got him a year later and Minxy is not quite two....here is Minxy looking from the windowsill earlier. She was washing herself.....She is still nothing but bone.....poor little cat...no teeth and no meat on her either.....but she doesn't notice any of that....
Thank you! Here is another pose I caught of hers today with my camera. She is such a model..... I love cats because any pose they do is just classic..... I was worried about Oscar....as he just slept since his ordeal.....drooling out blood from his mouth the entire time.....and just looked at his food bowel with a few failed attempts to eat anything. I finally called the vet, and was going to take him back to be checked...but then he started to make a come back with whipped cream. I have to be careful with that, though, as he had diabetes.......but after two small servings of it, he is starting to eat soft cat food again....and not drooling so much anymore. i was concerned, as Minxy was not doing this when she had all of her teeth removed, but i was told that is because Oscar's grade was much worse...whatever that means.....i haven't the foggiest.
I know some cats with missing teeth - they get expensive to feed. Does seem to happen to lots nowadays - but people didn't used to get cancer, some things are just going to come with living longer healthier lives. The upside is that we live to a billion, downside is now our pets are immortal and expensive, and we can't chain smoke without fear.
moonglow I am curious because you mentioned the 'cost' you have 9 dogs and cats...what is your monthly food bill?.....how much for 1 years vet stuff for all 9? please tell me you negotiate a bulk deal......i'm guessing vets give disc
Yes, the vet gives discounts to me here........usually 20 percent... insurance for all of the pets would not have been worth it, as that is out of the ball park expensive..... The pets are a huge responsibility and expense. I am sure the vet made enough to annex their building on a large scale from what they have been from this direction. oscar's bill came to a little over $800.00 just for his 4 remaining teeth to be removed.....well, the anestesia...blood work to see if it was safe for him to be put under, his physical.........was all a part of the total..... Deals are looked for here.....with food for them....and the cost is less for that than what you may think.....but if I did not have all of these pets and expenses at the moment for them all...i would be looking to book a long cruise..... I would not have kept all of these pugs...would have had Moxy fixed right away.....with 20/20 hindsite....but now that they are here.....they are owed the best care. that is what responsible pet owners do, as i am sure you know.... Roo, do you chain smoke?
oscar lost his two main front fangs that cats have this time....so i think his difficulty was partly due to that, as well, and he is much older than Minxy.
and one more bit of information...Champy pug had his dental and some teeth removed about 3 years ago. he was in a lot of pain due to that.....having a few bad teeth.........but ever since he came home from that...he immediately had a hard time trying to clear his throat making sounds which became a problem with a collapsing trachea that he has now. I am convinced that the tube that was put down his throat while he had this work done started the problems that he has now, which just get worse all of the time....so there is that to consider always, especially with pugs who have a difficult time breathing as it is. I am not sure what i will do when these pugs all get bad teeth if they do. It is a dilemma and something I have to think about seriously.
Oscar has a terrible infection in his mouth now...there were some options to deal with it...pills...forget it. I cannot get pills down into my cat's mouth that easily......a spray in the mouth....nah....so 3 laser treatments was decided on for 3 different visits..... Oscar sure has a fan club now....everyone at the vets adore him...he goes there...opens his mouth up voluntarily...no cat ever did that they said....and wears the goggles no problem and sits quietly and still while he is lasered.....They were so impressed with him and think he is so cute...they photographed him for their website..... i think oscar should have been in the movies..... If the infection is still bad...after the third visit...i will go to the spray....as I am not sure laser is that healthy...I don't know.
Oscar is on 4 days of a mouth squirt now.....not so bad. I should have opted for this choice in the beginning. The laser treatments....3 of them.... did not do anything to cure this infection he has in his mouth.
