Debt collection agencies are scam artists and criminal outfits period. They have ZERO power.Even if one is naive enough to pay them your credit will still be the same.If they call you hang up or tell them to go fuck themselves.Or better yet change your phone number to unlisted. These agencies should be illegal.A somewhat helpful site is www.ripoffreport.com.
And about those companies(also should be illegal) that look at a persons credit before hiring them, well those businesses are going to have a real tough time finding good people. Many people these days have poor credit, through very little or no fault of their own.--As a business owner myself the LAST thing I care about is an employees credit rating.Maybe I'm foolish but stuff like honesty, character, work ethic etc. is what I look for.
I'm assuming you owe money, and your not complaining about that, just the way it is handled? And if you want harassing debt collectors, for the first 4 years of when I moved into my place, I constantly got phone calls from debt collectors etc. saying they would take the house if I didn't pay. All those calls and letters I got were for people who lived here before me. I had to waste money to get a lawyer to send them a threatening letter. But at least it stopped. Just another reason I opt not to own any credit cards. If I can't afford to pay cash up front for things, then I just don't buy them.
Plenty of people, myself included, have excellent credit scores. You can say that a bunch of people got themselves into credit card/housing/loan debt because somebody misled them, scammed them, told them they would be able to repay. HOWEVER, the bottom line is most of the people in credit card/foreclosure trouble right now are in that spot because they overspent. They took deals without thinking them through or deals that were too good to be true. They could not for-stall gratification until they could actually afford the house or car or new rims and now they're in trouble. Anyway, yes, employers should care about the important stuff like "honesty, character, work ethic." Your credit score is one guage of this. Its not the only one, but it does comment on all of the above. Are you honest enough to keep your word and repay a responsibility? Do you have the character to keep good on your word and try to make ammends if you can't(you can repair a credit score). Do you have the work ethic and drive to repay debt and protect your score or do you say "fuck it" and run off. Actually, a credit score is a judgement of you character from your financial history, so it is a good tool for employers. But, I am glad that you hire people regardless because working people are better for everyone. Cheers
The credit system is pretty much a joke. Firstly if you actually down right maintain paying for the stuff you buy with cash and not spend yourself into debt. They Give you a null rateing till you actually put yourself into it. Not only that, They can't track anything worth a dam, and the mistakes are beyond belief. First car I went to get, obviously I did not have credit for since i had no plastic cards, so had to get co signer to start that off. then was mentioned to look into the reports .. So I did, and apparently at the time I opted to buy a phone line before i was born which ended and was in a collection status. yeah they decided to skip the argument part on how that was there, as well I decided to have a hospital bill at some point, But I happen to be alive for that one so decided they needed to research it. They finally took that off as well. so thats about how competent the system realy is. As for the debt collectors, I heard a realy nice thing to do on the radio the other week. When you pick up the phone, after the recorded speal, and/or live person picks up, Let them know your recording the phone call (which the message speal probably said to you on thier end.) Seems doing this gets them all pissed off and will not talk to you until you turn your recording of the phone call "off". Kinda shows ya the legitamacy there~
YOU got yourself in DEBT. Its YOUR responsibility. Stop whining about them trying to get their money back because you were irresponsible.
fuck that --cuss em out say hey motherfucker im eating dinner quit calling and deal with me by mail--im tired of your rudeness and im not discussing my finances on the phone with a stranger--usually they have a policy that if you use profanity or threatening language they hang up--which is what you want --right--moltherfucker quit calling and deal with me by mail works everytime and people saying debt is your responsibility you got yourself into this are definatly not hip and need to go away--fucking rightous bastards
my ex wife did that once, the next week she had the cops show up with a summons for her to appear in court over the bill. i would be very careful as to how i treat a bill collector, they can and will just take you to court. so its not hip to preach personal responsibility? i say its not hip to agree to pay for something and then expect others to just right it off when you decide you aint going to.
That's very,VERY unusual.Maybe a one in a million thing, but I've never heard of such a thing happenning.--When it comes to credit cards and similair issues these bill collectors are nothing more than people sitting in a call center--again,they and the companies they work for have ZERO power.--If they had any power whatsoever why would they have to call people over and over again? That is how con-artists operate.---And BTW this whole topic has nothing to do with personal responsiblity. It's about the 'criminal' activities of credit card and similair companies that have become rampant due to de-regulation.----Also in my opinion there should be a law that says if you tell one of these companies to stop calling, they HAVE to stop calling or get in big trouble.Hopefully such a law will be passed soon.
I so wish this was true... I really really do... When we moved here and got the phone hooked up, apparently the last people to have it were total deadbeats. Every freakin day we get at least 3 phone calls from companies looking for money from them. The first month, they were told the people no longer have this number. Of course, they just think we are lying to them, so they continue to call... Now, we either just ignore them, or if I am in a particularly foul mood, I answer it and tell them what a bunch of useless fucking cocksuckers they are if they can't even pick up a telephone directory. That usually grants a a couple of days of peace... and then it starts all over again... Letter have been written, the calls have been traced, the police have been called, conversations have been recorded.... none of it matters.
Have you noticed more and more everyday, people seem to think that keeping your word means nothing???
I can't speak for anywhere but here, but here, having laws that are supposed to protect the consumer and the consumer being protected are vastly different. If you wish to record every phone call you get, keep records of every incoming call, use the call trace feature from the phone company and deal with filing a complaint AND ALL that follows that, yes, then you can consider yourself protected by the laws...
Collection agency's are becoming a huge industry especially now with the economy in tatters. Collection agencies are now using the courts to get their money. Small claims courts. They will summons you to court for asset hearings. If you don't show they will get the judge to put a body attachment on you. That's a warrant. They can summons you month after month. Debtors prison is alive and well in the USA.
This is a similar experience that I've delt with at my home. This one guy called on a 866 number. And was telling us we could raise our credit on our credit card. But wasn't being specific on which credit card. And my mom was kinda putting him in his place, and questioning him a bit and he didn't like it, so he was the one who ended up hanging up on us. He called everyday at least 3 times in a row. for about 4 months. And if we'd pick up. He'd just hang up. People are straaaaaange.
so simple to just say "pay your bills you deadbeat." it's obvious that it's the right thing to do, that's really not the point of the thread. there are other factors, too. medical bills for example. that's not really a matter of spending beyond your means. if you have a serious medical problem, you need to get it checked out. those bills can pile up and add on to your existing bills, even if you have decent insurance. doctors will order tests that you have no idea whether you need or not, and they arent cheap. I thought med bills don't effect your credit but they do. anyway, it's not so cut and dry as many say.
