it annoys me that our natural lives aren't a little longer. i'm in no hurry to get there. fearing it, and i'm not claiming to be completely at peace with it, isn't going to do me a bit of good though.

as for belief, well, i have a certain confidence of having lived other lives on other worlds before this one. i don't know for certain what comes between lives, maybe an instant of nothingness in which untold years, perhapse even centuries pass in the tangable world of the living, or again possibly, a parallel universe like that in which my dreams are lived.

it seems a pretty long shot though, for anything anyone pretends to know, about what is not known, to turn out to closely resemble whatever is. so i take the claims of organized beliefs as to the nature of what comes next with something of a rather large grain of salt, while again not dismissing out of hand, the possibility that SOMETHING might.

    interesting thread

i don't fear death, i fear the pain

for health reasons, i have a DNR order
    (do not revive)

i don't know about an afterlife
    who knows...

i do know that you know when you are
    dying
a couple of times in the past, doctors
said your going to die etc
i just didn't feel it would happen
    it didn't

one time i felt yep, this is it
nearly was (this was before i
    had the DNR order)

The afterlife, heaven and all that, there's no way of knowing. Some people believe there is, some people believe not. But I think it's a shame that people who fall into the latter group feel the need to mock those in the former group for relying on their beliefs due to 'fear' or whatever other reason.
Because these people rely on their own smug sense of self importance just as much as the religious rely on God.

As for me, I'm on the fence as far as the afterlife goes. I don't fear death because I am not dying, and I'm also in the fortunate position of never having lost anybody close to me. My answer might be different if either of these points change.

I'm not afraid of death at all.

I don't believe in an afterlife either.

But just because I believe something doesn't make it true.

    I don't really care. *shrugs*

Fear is broken down into a few levels. There are those that "happen" and those that require action. Here is a partial list of level one fears devided into those types.

    Those that happen:
    Aging
    Becoming disabled
    Retirement
    Being alone
    Children leaving home
    Natural disasters
    Loss of financial security
    Change
    Dying
    War
    Illness
    Loosing a loved one
    Accidents

    Those requiring action
    Going back to school
    Making decisions
    Changing a career
    Making frinds
    Ending or beginning a relationship
    Having a child
    Asserting oneself
    Loosing weigh
    Being interviewed
    Driving
    Public speaking
    Making a mistake

All you need to do to diminish your fear is to develop more trust in your ability to handle whatever comes your way. Because if you knew you could handle anything that came your way, what would you have to fear?

    Absolutely nothing.

At the bottom of everyone of your fearsis simply the fear that you can't handle whatever life may bring you.

I don't believe that there is an afterlife.
    I don't fear death.
I would like to die before I get old but I won't commit suicide.

you can't have life without death, they are evaluative terms which depend on contrast for their meaning.....

every now and then you have to go off so that you can know you're on.

I do not believe or disbelieve in anything, so I do not worry about death and I do not avoid it. I kind of look forward to it, as I am curious about the Big Mystery.
In the meanwhilst I just enjoy life.

I've learnt them from some of my own experiences lately. I was asked to memorise the five truths about fear, and I simply quoted the first two. The list of things that happen, and require action were my own list, in my own words.

every one has their own fear process and different process on dealing with it

doesn't make any of it less valid

if i were to die tomorrow i would have no choice but to deal with it
from where i'm standing right now i'd honestly have no problem with it...
i'd feel like i'd be leaving this world with no imprint of myself though
i think thats the main thing keeping me here, i've thought about ending it, tried it, but honestly i'd leave no legacy, and that is an important part of my life

every one has their purpose, their life to live
and they will live it to their fullest no matter what
i believe in personal choice but i also believe in destiny
    there is a combined effort
you live the life you are ment to live combined with the life that is destined for you
every choice you make changes the road you are on, but you are always on that road

death is not something to fear but embrace, it is entirely a part of life

    thanks nightrose

i wanted to know if it came from you or a book
    you have a good memory
of course, life is for living
but death is a part of life
and it is good to talk about it
eg what do you want when you die
    organ donated
    buried
eg you know your friends and family
    want should they die

You have a good point :) , and of course fear is too. The thing with fear though, I believe that what you must learn is that whatever happens to you, given any situation, you can handle it. Because not only are you experiencing fear, but so is everyone else. Pushing through fear is less freightening than living with the fear that comes from the feeling of helplessness.

    i think that's what it's about
getting thru challenges is part of the
learning curve of life and change of
outlooks and being out of your comfort zone
