I'll have to look into this. I'm curious how long after sentencing that death row religious conversions usually occur. I suspect that it takes some time. If the convict is the one dragging things out, then he has no one else to blame for his "torture."
If that person actually committed that capital crime beyond a reasonable doubt, received a fair trial and was condemned to death; tough for him if it takes a while. I've no qualms about capital punishment in and of itself, what I have problems with is the system that dishes it out.
Me too. Obviously one would make all attempts to save one's life, I don't think that justifies years waiting for death.
Today is Charles Manson 70th birthday...he has been locked up for 35 years for the muder of Sharon Tate & others. Why isn't he put to death?
He was sentenced to death, but California commuted all death sentences prior to 1972 to life in prison following a California Supreme Court decision.
Me? I'm torn... If anybody were to kill my son I would want to see their life ended (if i wasn't able to end it myself). Violence begets violence, I know... But It just seems like natural justice that if you end a person's life your's is forfeit(sp)...
Because of expensive appeals. Give them ONE cheap, short appeal. That's it. Appeals rarely if ever bring up new evidence, they are just stalling tecniques. And, no, I don't think "sitting on death row" for a few years is WORSE than having your life cut short! Or worse than having some sick fuck molesting you. The system sucks, I understand that. But lawyers have added to that. Make it simple. I think the crimes punishable by DP should be limited. First Degree Murder. Murder in which torture or imprisonment was used. Murder of a Child. Murder in which Sexual Assault of the victim was used. Child Molesters.
Most of the people who would commit the above crimes aren't going to not do it because they are concerned with the consequences. Something has already snapped in their heads and they aren't planning that far down the road. It think that the death penalty should apply to people who do care about where their life goes. The death penalty should only apply to: Drunk Driving, Fraud, "white collar crimes", election tampering and the 700 club. These people give a fuck, and if you told them that if their blood alcohol limit goes above 1.0 then they will be crucified along route 80, they'd more than likely stop.
We'll have to agree to disagree. People do NOT "snap!" Many, most murderers know full well what they are doing. I couldn't care less if a child molester is "concerned" with consequences. I just want him gone. Death for White Collar Crimes? Does that include stealing staples and toner from your office?
Eugene, I don't see the Death Penalty as "Punishment" and I think you might. (A lot of people do.) I see it as a way to rid our world of the most evil. IMO, child molesters, serial killers, torture killers ect should not be allowed to take sustainance or draw breath. Not out of punishment, but out of protection of others. They make the entire world a worse place. The world is better off without them.
what if someone is wrongly accused of murder (for whatever reason). What if all the other suspects leave the country so the only one they can lock up and give a life sentence to is the guy who's to poor to leave the country, even tho there is no forensic evidence that the guy they locked up is guilty.
Well if it was completely foolproof I think everyone would join you in your belief. However, it is not. Innocent people are convicted. Do you really trust idiot (corrupt) policemen to conduct flawless investigations? And what about legal representation? Poor people cannot afford good lawyers. Think of all the murder cases where police and investigators just want to close the case. So they convict the most obvious suspect, not necessarily the guilty one. This stuff happens a lot more than we hear about.
I agree with you. Green. IF the system were less filled with flaws. It is too bad the victims and their families have to wait until then. Maybe if EVERYONE got public defenders, there would be less of a divide between the rich and the poor. I don't know. I feel for those unjustly found juilty and I feel for victims. I don't know what the answer is. Leaving serial killers and child molesters to goof around in jail for decades at my expense (see the great fun Richard Speck had in jail!) isn't the answer either.
I beleive they are. These are only prosecuted by the Feds, though, and it is rare to use the DP. But it can and has been done. Remember the Rosenbergs in the 50s?
