Dealing With Vertigo :(

    Vertigo anyone deal with it and how do you handle it? The room spins all the time blurred vision I see lines and circles I feel like I'm going to walk into a wall or faint when this happens I get scared and panicked, I take valium for it but it only works for 4 hours then I'm back to being dizzy again. I have been in physical therapy for years and that didn't help. I was hit by a car in 2009 and my doc thinks that's when this vertigo started after that. I don't see her until July I would like a different med like Valium that is sort of the same but has a longer effect. I don't know what to do anymore I have been fine for awhile now its getting to the point that I can't handle it

    you may want to try chinese herbal medicine or acupuncture


    meditation practice might be helpful, and it's free.

    Every now and again (this morning in fact) I can star off into the distance and right above my brow is a sensation or a vision of rotating ceiling fans. I see them spinning, like the blades. When I look up with my eyes they aren't visable but just when I'm relaxed and staring out. Not all the time, but I have started to notice this.

    got to be sure you start off on the right side though or shit hits the fan

    by right side i mean correct side that is causing the problem not left/right

    stop taking the valium...next time the doctor tries to push drugs ask to be referred to an ear specialist

    I agree with seeing a specialist. I had a friend who had this for years to the point of being in the hospital from it. After seeing the specialist they diagnosed it and treated it. She rarely gets the spins now, possibly once or twice a year instead of constantly.

    I have been in physical therapy for years and that never helped I feel so off balance when I walk like on a boat that rocks back and forth. Blurred vision. I guess I have to wait till July until I see the doc even reading or typing I see flashes and that makes me dizzy too

    Often it is caused by inner ear issues hence the recommendation to see someone who specializes in that. :)

    Hope you manage to find some relief from this. I have tinnitus and it drives me batty at times and does change my balance.

    I think there can be multiple causes of vertigo. If the cause is BPPV, then it sounds like what Spaceman said could work great.

    While I'm not qualified to make a conventional or TCM differential diagnosis, if you can give me some more information, I might be able to suggest some simple dietary changes that might help.

    Do you also have symptoms like numbness or trembling in the extremities, dry skin or hair, palpitations, anxiety, night sweats, headaches, or digestive problems?

    I do have dry skin I get numbness when I sleep yes to palpitations yes to anxiety and yes headaches. I see flashes when I look at things and blink and lines a circles

    According to a book I've read, you most likely have what is called Blood Deficiency in Chinese Medicine (Blood Deficiency has a specific meaning in Chinese Medicine, and does not necessarily mean that you should do things which are thought to be good for the blood in conventional medicine). Problems with diet or emotional stress are the cause of Blood Deficiency in most cases.

    The book suggests only ingesting foods and liquids which are served at at leastroom temperature or warmer (while still not ingesting anything that will burn your mouth). All foods should be lightly cooked. Fresh whole foods are better than processed ones or leftovers.

    It is recommended to have little or no citrus, salt, tofu, milk, cheese, or sweetener. Cooked squash, carrot, and sweet potato are recommended, as well as spices like cardamon, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and black pepper.

    You may also want to try seeing an acupuncturist or traditional chinese medicine herbalist, though this can be expensive. If there is an acupuncture school near you, sometimes they will have a student clinic that offers reduced fees.

    Meditating and generally trying to lower your stress levels could help a lot.

    big problem I drink allot of milk. what about the flashes I see and room spinning lines circles?

    Drinking a lot of milk may be a significant part of why you are having this problem. Changing your diet can be difficult especially if it has become a habit over the years. But there are lots of people who drink little or no milk. You just have to find other foods to replace the milk.

    I'm not guaranteeing that the vertigo and the vision problems are being caused by Blood Deficiency. Your symptoms do match the description of Blood deficiency pretty well though.

    Effectively treating the Blood Deficiency should clear up both the vertigo and the vision problems and also help with the anxiety and other problems.

    I have Benign Positional Vertigo. This is what I was told to do and it works for me.

    Lay on your bed with your head and shoulders hanging off the end or side of the bed. Stay in that position for at least 30 seconds.

    Turn your head to the left (or right) and hold it there until the spinning stops. Then turn your head the other way and hold for the same.

    You may have to do this two or three times. It always cures mine...I mean I still get it from time to time but it cures me at that time, lol.


    Do not do this on a full stomach. [​IMG]


    Your eyes may flick back and forth...that's normal but kinda scary. [​IMG]

    I talked to the doctor she upped my medicine and is sending me back to physical therapy. to get the vertigo under control

    I'm at a loss here Jennifer. You made a thread, asked for advice, then ignored it all. Went right back to PT and valium which apparently is not working for you as you are still suffering with the issue.

    I'm doing what the doctor said. not trying to ignore what advise you guys giving me. the upping my med has brought the dizziness down I am not so dizzy and in extreme panic attacks

    physical therapy they will do all the exercises you guys talk about it will be by someone who is experience in this area the doc seems to think therapy is the option when the rocks get displaced she is able to get them back in place and with the medicine upping should make things better

    I take half a pill morning and a full one at night. she seems too think therapy helped the last time maybe it did my memory sometimes is not good with stuff like that

    Yes, those "rocks" that get displaced in the inner ear are a cause of vertigo. That is the cause of mine. If you are more comfortable having a PT do the exercise for you I am sure that is fine. But you can do it yourself if need be.


    But, some of the most common side effects of Valium is dizziness, spinning sensation and ataxia (loss of balance)...also memory problems. Actually Valium has a long list of side effects.


    Have you by any chance tried Yoga and meditation? Both are great balancers for people both emotionaly and physically.
