I can explain. I am tolerant of pretty much any way that people choose to live their lives, as long as they're not hurting anybody. But intolerant prudes bother me a lot, because they do hurt people by keeping them in the closet. Plus, if you are pro-tolerance, there is nothing inconsistent about being against other people being intolerant. Maybe it would be easier to understand with respect to race. It is not hypocritical to object to people using racial epithets, while at the same time saying that racists are assholes. Who would have thought that a hip free love forum would attract so many people opposed to free love?
I find that with prudes that a strong crotch grab and a "I gochterintoleranceritehea!! works wonders.
Now ladies, let's play nicely! Back to the topic, I'm not a loud, domineering presence in a conversation, but tend to absorb what's being said and then jump in. When I hear a lot of prudish discussion I find I can't bite my tongue very well though. I become very outspoken and usually watch the "holier-than-thous" cringe in their chairs :hide: like they're hearing the voice of Satan himself. :reddevil: One instance that comes to mind happened a couple of months ago when my wife and I were out with a group of neighbors from where we used to live. The one guy made mention of how his 25-ish year-old son bought a house and his girlfriend was constantly at his place. I innocently asked if they were living together. He got all defensive and said his son was a VIRGIN! That was insane. I pointed out to my ex-neighbor that he and his wife had lived together before they got married. In my single days I had live-in girlfriends. Geez, it's not the 1950's anymore! Anyhow, I pushed the point and my ex-neighbor finally shyly admitted his son and girlfriend were living together. Geez, there's no shame anymore. It seems like every couple lives together for a while these days. Get real!
It was 50 years ago this month that birth control pills first became approved for sale in the US, but in most states it was roughly another 20 years before The Pill was made available to unmarried women. Morally conservative lawmakers felt strongly that a single woman should have no need for birth control and no desire to obtain it. This is an extreme example of what can happen when liberated people do not stand up for our rights. Prudes can make important parts of our lifestyle illegal. They have done it before and it could happen again, if we allow it. All it takes is apathy or lack of courage on our part, or an excessive concern about offending others. Prudish people don't like to be reminded that other points of view exist, but that isn't our problem. There is never going to be lasting peace between people who are on opposite extremes of this issue. The other side is never going to give up and stop trying to control us.
This is so true. Ppl denounce Muslim fanatics in those backward countries of the world who violate human rights under their sharia law but neglect calling out the Christian fanatics in our own country who want to do the same. Whether Puritan or Taliban, they are the same controllers that want to push their narrow religious views on everyone else.
In a different but related issue, I find it shocking the Republicans are still trying to overturn Abortion Rights (i.e., Roe v. Wade). That dates back to 1973, so it's been on the books for 37 years. I'm not saying abortion should be encouraged either. I think it's the decision of the woman or the couple and should not be dictated by government. Roe v. Wade doesn't say anyone HAS TO GET an abortion, it just makes that option LEGALLY available vs the coat hanger in the alley approach. Roe v. Wade was decided by the U.S. Supreme Court - it's LAW! There's also a little thing called separation of church and state - that's also the LAW! I don't see a problem with people being morally opposed to abortion or anything else, but I can't stomach those prudes trying to force their values on the rest of society.
marijuana has been illegal, by LAW! for much longer, and people still try to overturn that one too...
As usual, the key word for me is choice. I scarcely do 10% of the slutty things I used to do, but that is my choice. I would be mad as hell if someone was imposing those decisions on me because of their personal moral opinions. I want to see future generations of young people have the same freedom to explore, experiment, and express themselves that I had, if they want it.
Ummm, have you heard of Medical Marijuana? Marijuana for medical purposes was decriminalized in Colorado a few years ago. When President Obama requested that restrictive federal laws not be enforced, the Medical Marijuana shops became mainstream in Colorado. They're on the street with big signs advertising their existence. The regulation of the shops is now a topic of debate in the local government but the shops remain open. I don't smoke anymore, but I appreciate the appeal. Inside the shops one can select from a variety of conventional and gourmet varieties with all the paraphernalia to make it a pleasurable experience.
Hahaha this was like years ago, before I really was having sex or anything, but I told this chick about making out with a guy, and she was like "ew..uh, I'm just not into guys..."
I'm sorry, but what's your point?? In my earlier post I said the Republicans are trying to overturn Roe v. Wade. Your post seemed to indicate laws can't be overturned. I gave an example. I don't get your point in the statement above. Are you just restating the obvious?
your original post made it seem like the law couldn't be overturned, and that these people were wrong for even considering changing it. i just mentioned a different law that i thought you were less likely to agree with that people are also trying to overturn even though, as you stated, it's LAW!
Karen_J it seems to me that most of what you have been saying in this thread is summed up in your new sig pic. You know the old saying about a picture being worth a thousand words? That one look from Janis speaks volumes about sexual freedom.
It does feel empowering to have her up there. I can see it possibly being quite uncomfortable for a prude to come onto a hippie website and post something against personal freedom while Janis Joplin is staring them in the face.
Now Karen, what would Grace Slick say about that? (Sorry, I couldn't resist. Ya know I luv ya!!) Here's to the prudes!!
People have the right to their own opinions and beliefs on these topics, if these people are trying to force theirs down your throat that's their issue in the long run not yours. Thats usually where I end up drawing my lines
