I'm looking forward to this whole website. I am a middle aged fellow who lives in his RV with his partner and travels the United States. I'm from Maine and spent most of my life in New England so for the last 4 years I have been wandering in the west seeing more of the country.

    Hi from CT.
I hitchhiked across the country from here to CA back in 72.
Good times. Now we can no longer say, "Dave's not here, man!"

Hi Naturallyexited, I have been in Maine for a couple of weeks in 1978 for a field trip with the other students from New York. Nature was perfect around the finger lakes, the Indian villages, and the dense forests. I was 29 and young I drived from New York up there without overnight stopping by my old VW model 1965. I love the Maine natural environment all along the road. I wish I could travel there once more time. Well come to the forum, my friend.

    Welcome to the HipForums!

I would like to hear more about your life on the road. I may be doing that soon.

Interested to know about your rig, and where you find places to be for awhile without hassles. Obviously camping in Wal Mart parking lots gets tired... and I hear RV parks are overflowing with like-minded people on the road. Many have lost their homes and jobs and this is the only way to survive.

We hope you are enjoying the life greatly!

I have camped back and forth across the country in a VW Camper Van and also in a more decked out motor home on a Ford Econoline truck chassis. It had a shower, toilet and air conditioning with space to sleep four. It was always fun... from Maine to California and back and forth...

I've been on the road four years and I love it! I have a 32 ft motor home and tow a small car. I have batteries and solar and spend most of my time out in the woods or desert.

I have a blog, travelwithdave.org. no selling, just info on what I've done.

Great fun! I have been to a lot of the same spots. And I'm thinking of doing that again soon.

Now I am in Mexico waiting for the vaccine so I can travel about without that thought... hopefully.

Stay safe and travel well! Nice rig you have there :)

There are some web sites that list places to stay for free. We use Campendium and freecampsites quite often. Out west you can camp on almost any federal land for free. Right now we are just north of Yuma next to a small lake. We hope to stay here until the first of the year.

Where in Mexico? We'd love to travel down there but really want to do it with someone so we aren't alone.

Thank for the excellent advice Dave!

And that picture of the lake is really nice... idyllic.

I have camped just north of Yuma...one time we went down across the border there and got eyeglasses or something, and found not one hotel available in Yuma that night... so we headed north and ended up camped by a canal way off road and had two strange occurances that night.

First a rowdy gang of bikers roared by us and setup about 200 yards away and proceeded to have a huge bonfire and party with lots of screaming and gunshots blasting in the night...

We got up and moved a mile or so away, got back to sleep, and were awakened by either UFOs or stealthy helicopters over us...hovering... no engine sound, huge blasts of wind... and then spotlights starting picking us out as they hovered...

Needless to say we packed up and kept driving thru the night until we got home to Las Vegas. It's a long drive :)

That was years ago... how much protection do you carry in your rig? Just wondering.

    I am peaceful. I don't even own a gun.

I have been on the road for over 4 years and haven't had any problems. I was nervous for some reason around Reno but I solved that by leaving.

We have a bat and bear spray - the bat will never get used since the person would be too close by then but it looks good. We don't do weapons either.

We are at a pond called Fortuna Lake and it is great! We drove down from Lake Mead yesterday!

    Thanks for your encouraging words!

Yes a bat and bear spray are about all I would need.

    Have fun at the lake!
