there are plenty of darkpsy tracks with melody.

ever heard the track whirligig by Ocelot?
it contains a very nice old school goa riff melody.

although the genre is a tad watered down (what electronic genre isnt?) at the moment, there is still a lot of cutting edge and interesting psy out there. you are entitled to your opinion, but i think its a harsh criticism of what is some of the most complex and advanced form of music being produced right now.

repetetive? yes. but boring? no. the repeating bassline is essential to creating unique states of consciousness, along with the heavy hitting kicks that i dont hear in other dance music. what i find impressive is that so many moods can be evoked with the use of non-pitched sounds and rythmic structure instead of melody. when on the dancefloor under the stars at night with your perfect strangers the psytrance beat brings us closer to the vibration of uhmmmmmmmm. there is nothing to me like the nighttime darkpsy dancefloor experience. i love psytrance :D

i love me some south Afrikan producers too. Artifakt was the shit when he came here to texas.

and speaking of psymbient...heres a track ive been working on.

I'm overly critical of Psytrance because it is my main choice of music. I eat it, breathe it, live it, and dream about it when I sleep. I've listened to so God damn much of it that I'm TIRED of it. I'm overly critical of it in the same way that I'm overly critical of my own art. I love it so much that all it's faults seem to stick out like crazy.

Anyways, you guys don't have to defend psytrance, as I love it too, even the stuff I don't think is good at all I can still enjoy. In fact, I can probably enjoy ANY psy.

I'm generalizing here because it's possible to do so. It is true that a great deal of dark psy, and lots of all psy includes one note bass-lines, which isn't always a BAD thing.

Also, my interpretation of boring is mine and mine alone. You trying to argue that you think something isn't boring when I do isn't going to get us anywhere. That's simply my opinion vs. yours, and therefore there is no right or wrong

It IS a harsh criticism of Psytrance, but I'm not criticizing the stuff that actually is complex and advanced. My problem with the genre right now is that release after release, artist after artist, few do anything unique or progressive.

If I throw my entire psy library on shuffle, there is only a small amount of stuff I can actually identify. Why? Because it all sounds the same. Sure, I enjoy that sound. But you would think with 10-20 albums released every month there would be some variety. Sure there are progpsy releases, darkpsy releases, melodic-psy, full-on, even commercial psy at this point. But within the whole genre and within each sub genre it's mostly all the same. Most psytrance artists aren't actually creating anything new, beautiful, complex, and advanced. Most psytrance artists are just following a tried and true formula. Thats not to say that all formulas are HORRIBLE, I mean psytrance can't be psytrance without a 4/4 kick and some basic charicteristics of the genre. But still, album after album, and even song after song on each album, are just the same ideas repeated again and again.

I sample new album after new album, song after song, same shit, different name. I'm tired of reading album descriptions that blow albums up and say, this shit is new and innovative, and it sounds like the same fucking shit thats been around for years.

Anyways, I like to rant, and it helps me vent, because I really do LOVE psytrance, it's mostly all I listen to. Being that, it's not like there isn't a lot of it I love. So like I said, you don't have to defend the genre. I'm really just venting about the stagnant state most of it's in. I've actually heard a lot of albums this year that really push a lot forward. But I find something wrong with that being something like 10 or 20 albums out of the hundreds that have been released. It's too easy to produce, everyone wants to do it, everyone is doing it, so there's just way too much shit out there.

Look from here on out I'll stop bashing shit and just contribute what I like in darkpsy. I've vented enough.

I've enjoyed the new Audiosex album Female Intuition. It's got some nasty tracks on it. The production values aren't the greatest but who cares? The track Mother on there ditches a bass line and has a kick replace it, which I absolutely love the sound of. The track by Aria on Pandoras Box does the same thing. Could be two separate kicks or just a delay on the kick which produces the sound, either way it gives it a much faster, harsher sound then your typical bassline. Some of the tracks are super fast too, I enjoy the idea of something like Psychedelic gabber trance, think it would be pretty intense.

Oh I think I forgot to mention Penta as one of my favorite darkpsy artists earlier. He's actually what helped me enjoy darkpsy and not find it boring as I first did when I started listening to it. One of my favorite tracks of his is Eater of Worlds, which uses a great sample from It.

Very refreshing post man, I'm sorry - I think we got our wires crossed earlier..

Taking all sections of your post into account, I'd be interested to see what you think of my friend (Psionic Entity)'s music - http://www.myspace.com/psionicentity - newest track is 'Direction Unclear' - but all he songs are well worth the listen.. especially 'Vitamin Cheese' which features a lot of South Park sample and a nicely mixed in South Park tune..

i can totally understand your feelings about psytrance currently. i was in the same boat a few months ago until some badass new compilations came out and revamped my faith in the psygods. :D dont be so jaded.
I totally feel you man, the genre is waaaay oversaturated but i don't have time for the run of the mill crap. i critique albums almost militarily, so no crap ends up in my collection. if i don't even like the way the kicks or bass just sounds on a track, i could give a fuck how "unique" sounding it is, i wont buy it. i'm not a fan of mass-produced music that just sounds the same. it sounds to me like you have too much music. if i put my itunes on shuffle, as a dj, it would be a travesty for me not to identify a track. i know my music well enough, and the tracks and albums that make it into my purposefully small collection are recognizable. i can't tell you how many times i have been on a dancefloor and me and my buddies recognize a track like "yeaaah i love this one :D"

to tell you the truth, i feel that morning, and full on have been more uniform in the releases coming out. it all sounds like progressive and isra-club-trance nowadays. darkpsy seems to be doing more experimental things, with the bpms, and the structure of the music changing quite a bit.

the reason psytrance is so watered down right now is because its becoming more popular. this is both a blessing and a tragedy. we have producers coming out from all over the world now. still, i think some of the more veteran artists are still pushing the envelope and setting standards for the new ones...with the exception of infected mushroom...

Yeah, I probably do have way too much psy in my library, half of it I hardly ever listen to.

Anyways, hey man if you know of some great releases let us know what they are.
