Has anyone out there ever actually read Darwin's book? (On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life). Having been brought up to revere it scientifically as a foundational and definitive, groundbreaking text I was absolutely gobsmacked to discover it is written in a consistently speculative style. Darwin obviously knew this - hampered as he was by the limited science of his day - but he did expect that if (and I believe even he conceded if) it were true, it would be borne out by future scientific discovery. However, we discover this has not yet happened (whatever the looney-fringe reductionists and bestselling whisky-glass philosophers say), and looking over the history we discover appaulling disingenuity on the part of generations of scientists as they have - each in their day - attempted to stuff the known facts into the democratically elected reality they call Evolution, whilst minimising the damaging effects of party-poopers (e.g. Mendel). Then of course, every 20 years or so we all have to get off that train and onto another (though, being only human, not all get off, regardless of the science!) The truth is, what's the option? The alternative, presumably, is God, and well... what the heck is that all about? Don't need my brain there... Seek and ye shall find, said Jesus, but how fast that process is for each of us will depend on where we look (unless like many previous posters we take the faith-position that there is no answer and give up), and we don't have forever....... or do we??
A year and half ago we reached a consensus to table this discussion until some asshole with nothing better to do decided to necro-post this thread Hotwater
If a lot of people in different places used to believe something, then it must be true. Therefore the earth is flat. If you ever go on a cruise, I hope your captain is careful and doesn't take you over the edge of the world. Falling for all eternity would suck.
Speaking of falling, here is the creation science version of the law of gravity: http://www.theonion.com/articles/evangelical-scientists-refute-gravity-with-new-int,1778/ .
I wanna know where to find some whiskey glass philosophers. They sound more erudite than the usual beer bottle sorts I hang with.
The majority of Christians that I've ever talked about this with believe in a combination of Evolution and Creation. I'm reasonably sure that pitting the concepts against each other like this is a straw-man argument.
