In my opinion? Well, I would have to say Slash isn't that great, and I've never been able to stand Peter Green, either. Although blues is my favourite music, I find that older blues guitarists such as Albert King and Buddy Guy tended to be great singers but awful guitarists. Just listening to Albert King playing with Gary Moore makes me cry with laughter. I've not heard a great deal of Duane Allman stuff, but he hasn't impressed me as of yet. I love Led Zeppelin, but Jimmy Page has a touch of Emporer's Clothes about him (still great, though.) Underrated is easier. Buckethead, Billy Duffy, Johnny Marr, Jeff Healey, Jeff Beck, James Hetfield (unfortunate to be playing second fiddle to Kirk Hammett in Metallica), and a few others, too.
Well I disagree with about half of what you said. Underrated is a bit easier; Steve Kimock and Danny Gatton are probably the two most underrated guitarists I can think of. John Cipollina to a lesser extent. Still can't quite pinpoint what you think sucks about Clapton. Do you think he is boring?
Got on this thread a little late. Cream released their first album 40 years ago. They blew us away. Studio work was in the very early stages on multi-channel equipment. Today you can take your grandmother in and make sound like a super star.. Cream Rocks......
I loved them. Their songs bring back great memories. JibaJohn: and what do you think of them? and where in MD are you? Howard County here.
Well, I must point out something, Axis: Bold As Love. You said you feel Eric Clapton is a poor guitarist in comparison to some of the other guitarists out there. Does that make him a poor guitarist in general, though? Let me explain my point. I love Jimmy Page and David Gilmour both. I feel Jimmy Page takes the cake when it comes to playing ability. Even though I feel that way, I still think David Gilmour is an excellent guitarist. So, although you consider Eric Clapton below David Gilmour, that still doesn't explain why you think Eric Clapton is a poor guitarist and overrated. He may not be the best to you, but that does not make him a poor guitarist.
Yes. I mean, he was an innovator and an influential guitarist back in his Bluesbreaker and Cream days, but he's got worse and worse (in my opinion.) And I think he's the Emporer's clothes, anyway; I don't think he's ever been that great. I might buy 'The Road to Escondido' with J.J. Cale, though; it's gotten good reviews.
I phrased it wrong at first; I meant to say that he is poor in comparison to what I percieve to be the greatest guitarists ever; Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Buckethead, Billy Duffy, Johnny Marr, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore etc. For the record, I think he is a decent guitarist, but he's never appealed to me, and I feel that he is far from being one of the greats. And I know that it's totally off topic, but as a guitarist I feel that I must tell you that (btw, I too love Led Zeppelin) that Jimmy Page has very average technique. David Gilmour's stuff is a lot more demanding to play. Believe me on this one.
You point being? I've noticed that you're seventeen, you must be the pinnacle of knowledge; teach me, o master...
Duane Allman hasn't impressed you?????? Your'e not an easy guy to impress or you need to start listining more!
Advise me what to buy, because anyone that's famous for playing guitar is of interest to me. I've heard his most famous lick on youtube, plus 'Hey Jude'. Pretty boring.
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5937559/the_100_greatest_guitarists_of_all_time/ Gatton was named the 63rd greatest guitarist of all time here, but the list sucks, I'm afraid.
That list does suck shit. Kurt Nobrain beats out garcia, beck, and santana. That's pretty disgusting. Susprised Gatton is on there though, not many people seem to know who he is. Anyways, you've never heard Mountain Jam?
It's a song by the allman brothers band. The most accessible version is a live one from fillmore east, you can get it on the eat a peach album. Or the fillmore album. It's a pretty good song.
hahah - I just have to comment that I am listing to Mountain Jam right now as I read this. Eat a Peach is a great album. live at Fillmore east too. "There ain't no revolution, it's evolution, but every time I'm in Georgia I eat a peach for peace." - Duane Allman
I just must comment on this...... not everyone can like clapton, and i respect that about you. however, for someone who's not really into him, you sure do have a lot of his music..... .....but about ginger baker, a good drummer (for his time)??????? I mean, he only paved the road for innovative drumming....imagine metallica without a double-bass drum driving it into your skull.......nah....ginger baker IS the shit
oh, and reference back to Mountain Jam....i think it was a donovan song first, then allman bros. took it to a 45 min. jam
