Ummm.... parenting your children at school would include accompanying them would it not? I think that is why we grant schools permission to make certain "parenting" decisions. That'd be like saying it's up to parents to make sure their kids go to class when they're at school.... and to make sure they don't curse....and well you get the idea.

Well, I'm a homeschooler, so actually I do parent my children at school. But it seems to me a good parent would raise their child to understand the difference between school time and playtime. That's what the parent's responsibility is. And should I send my kids to school, it's the teacher that is responsible for them while they are there. Not the US government. Huge difference.

does the school have a right to block chatrooms and message boards, yes, and it's really not that bad of an idea. does congress have a right to make a law saying that all public schools have to block chatrooms as message boards, no.

I use my libiary sometimes. It is free. They have stopped certain sites. Specific ones ?. I don't know. I think it would be helpful to know the details, as has been highlighted by yourself and other.
Asking the person in my libiary, they just say it is due to spam and ceratain sites being more open in effecting computers if accesed. Not knowing much about these issues, and not living within the US. All this might not be valid in my case. Knowing more details would be nice. i agree.

The Hip Forums have been banned for quite some time in some libraries. I was told I'd have to call each one to get the bans removed! The first one I tried I could never connect with the one person there who could do something (this after a month of phone calls!)

Is it specificaly the ''Hip forums'' or just a particular aspect of what is involved and the 'norm' in forums ?. Sometimes highly offensive material.

I have looked around this forum, and i find 18+ material.
Nothing overtly horendously offensive, though not something somebody under a certain age should view.

Some libiaries have after school activities . Having access to some material maybe innapropriate. It is also open to younger children being 'groomed'. Theses matters you just can't be too careful about.
I'm not suggesting this place is a hot bed for innapropriate behaviour [to put it mildly].

They maybe just do not wish to 'rate' each individaul site and just put a blanket ban on forums not registerd to some scheme of some kind.

In anycase i hope the site is not effected to badly.

lol, who are they to decide what you are allowed to see and what not anyway... if someone underaged want's to see 18+, let them do it, why the hell is it 18+ anyway?
Some sort of ancient rule, which makes no sence to the current situation.
Useless to prevent people from seeing a certain site, you can download 18+ material anywhere anyway.

the ban has to do with online communities...not the content.

The legislation is meant to protect children from pedos...so sites where there are 'communities' are to be banned from public places where under 18 year olds could gain access to sites like myspace.

    Yeah right,
    protect children from pedo's.

Like a kid, and I say kid because I cant really say it another way, doesnt know when someone is a fucking old pervert?
You gotta be really stupid not to notice.
If someone on the net comes to you that you dont know at all, and asks you if you want to send pictures or if you have a big penis, then how stupid can you be to answer?? It's all about what you have been teached to take care of yourself!!
It's like a basic rule, WATCH OUT.
If parents or schools have been unable to teach a young kid that, then they already failed with their so called protection, and it would be stupid to place a ban.

Besides, what the hell is banning it from public libraries good for?
PUBLIC libraries, like you are really safe there?
It's safer on the internet then walking on the streets for fuck sake.

Unfortunately, there are no shortage of horror stories of underage kids meeting nasty old people with bad results...

Urm, its because kids might get in contact with pedos from the library...

Its a ban at public places, which means schools and libraries.

    Well,
all of those that got carried away are stupid, or kept stupid.
Just teach your children what the fuck is dangerous and what is not, is that so hard?
And many many stories about kids getting abused are bullshit in the end, so looking at that, I think it's stupid to ban something like that from a public space while you have more chance getting in trouble on the outside :p

Ok... kids might get in contact with pedo's from the library...
How the hell do u want to realise that?
Instant messaging over the library network? give me a break :p
To get in contact with a pedo in the same library would be very strange,
first of all, the pedo must already know you, how else would he/she be able to contact you over the internet??? They will have to know exactly who is who, and actually be on the same site, or in a buddy list... so meeting up can already be realised, if sites like this are banned or not...
Then second, if a pedo can already get into the library, then you dont really need a computer if it's a kid many years younger then you, you can actually talk to that kid in REAL-LIFE, so what's better...?

By banning a site like myspace.com from a public space,
you dont actually protect children... that's plain bullshit.

    Peace :)
