The event organizer's written statements about the pricing differential indicate a lack of clear thought, and the articles linked to the original posting aren't great either.

The whole thing seems to be a publicity stunt, but the organizer didn't get much press on it outside Detroit, nor even much in Detroit. At the front end, the event organizer should have hired a professional PR firm, or a better one than the one they used for this.

The whole idea of differentiating people under a term as imprecise as those who are and are not "People of Color," and then confusing and conflating it with racial identity makes it a failure from the outset. The "Of Color" concept includes huge numbers of people who simultaneously identify as being White, notably Latinos, and those with ancestry in the Middle-East, and North Africa. That's about 40 million people in the US, and hundreds of thousands in the Detroit area.

Also, the organizer's idea that POC are suffering the effects of past oppression is only partially true. Some are, and some aren't. People who identify as Asian fall within any definition of POC, and Asian Americans have the highest income level of any group in the US. They're at the top of the pyramid, not the bottom. The individual country of origin or ancestry with the highest economic achievement in the US? India, yes, falling squarely within the event organizer's concept of "Black and Brown."

 

Since everyone at the Martinsville 500 is white, they'd have to charge by the various shades of white

White trailer trash (one-time, free admission) (full price charged for beer)
Gingers or Celtic white ($100 dollars) with a free can of 100 SPF sunscreen
A Whiter shade of pale ($105 dollars)
Ghost white ($110 dollars)
Snow white ($120 dollars)
Vanilla ($130 dollars)
Cream ($140 dollars)
Off-white ($140 dollars)
White but tanned ($200 dollars) - traitor
