if anyone is interested in this subject look for the ''humanure handbook'' on the web. it's really good book, also a lot of general information about termophilic composting. author name is jenkins, i think
well sure, i can't compost, because I don't have my own house and garden.. and my kitchen is too small, and i have nothing to do with the humus as well.. but in the future, prolly will have my own as well
where we live, there is a waste watch program in effect. everyone has to separate their refuse into recyclables, compost, and waste and it is picked up every week. we deceided to save our compostable material for our little veggie patch. we've got a nice little compost heap in our yard. the straw (as mentioned by steffan) really does cut down on the smell. we used the bales of straw that we banked our house with over the winter to make a kind of shelter for the heap. we did have a problem with a neighbours dog rooting through it so we used an old herring net (found it in the barn. lol) to wrap around the heap. he hasn't bothered it since.
I'm thinking that if your compost is stinking, something is amiss with how you're going about it. My household composts, as do most of our friends, and I've never been around one that had an odor problem. It all has to do with building a proper enclosure, getting the right mix of ingredients, turning/aerating properly, etc. If you're doing this right, it shouldn't stink. Dumping all your garbage in a big pile does not a compost heap make. A great book on the subject that I'd highly recommend to anyone interested in the process of composting is "Let It Rot" by Stu Campbell. The "Rodale Guide To Composting" is good, as well. Rot on.
Composting is awesome. Its better than any fertilizer you can buy in the stores. And Dharmadrums is right, it shouldnt stink. We mix straw in with ours every once in a while as a natural way to prevent stinking, and the sides of our enclosure are made from chickenwire, so air can get in through the sides as well.
it bothers me that there aren't ENUF ppl composting... ah well, we each do our little part I suppose...
