I know this is an old subject, and sorry to bring it up again, but it's bugging me now. I have yet to see one other person barefoot in the UK this whole summer (except on the beach, which doesn't count). Normally I would have seen a fair few by now, especially in this glorious weather. I fear going barefoot has become a complete taboo.:(

However I have seen more barefooters this summer than for many years. Counting only people walking along the street with no footwear in sight (i.e. not holding shoes in the hand - I don't ask to check their bags!) I've so far reached the grand total of TEN, yes TEN!
Breakdown by location: Camden 4, Notting Hill 2, Brighton 2, Islington 1 and Euston 1.
I doubt that any significance attaches to variations in such small numbers.

Blimey! That's ten more than me! Were the Camden ones at the market? Used to be plenty there, but saw none on my visit there earlier in the summer

One actually in the Market, two nearby on the main road and the other one in Parkway. Agreed - time was when you always saw barefooters at the market in the summer but no longer.

I know how you feel. I did see one barefooter down in Lewisham one morning, looks as he was coming back from the newsagent. But that is all I have seen. Complete taboo? Maybe not, but perhaps its the fear factor, what others would think. Its a shame really. With the lovely weather lasting this long, I have been barefoot a lot more. Hoping it continues.

Yeah there's a few about, here in Glastonbury there are always a few out shopping at the weekend..keep the faith :)

BTW if it was really common we wouldn't be special and feel the need for an odd forum about grubby feet!

I'm in Newcastle and started going barefoot full time 8 weeks ago :) Don't know of any others in my area though.

:sunny:Yay! All these positive posts have worked!! This lunchtime saw a barefoot hippy-ish girl in a short top (with a magnificent tan), jeans, ankle bracelet, and filthy feet! Shopping in our local high street. Only taken till September...but quite cheered me up:)

My girlfriend is barefoot pretty much all the time in the summer and is regularly out and about in London. You're right though - not many others...

Fact: All BBC newsreaders go barefoot when they read the news; you just can't see because their feet are hidden under the desk (they quickly put shoes on, when they have to be shown in a full body shot, presenting an item in front of the big monitor, for the benefit of any squeamish viewers who may be watching while eating their tea at the same time).

Seriously? I can't imagine the likes of George Alagiah or Jeremy Paxman doing this. How do you know? :)

Okaaaaayyy, it's probably not a fact. I was just trying to throw in a bit of levity after getting off on a rather ponderous footing (haha) in here to start with! Still, I wouldn't be surprised if one or two newsreaders didn't lever off shoes whilst sitting behind the reading desk desk during the summer months; especially those not wearing lace-ups, but ones easily slip-on and slip-offable.
