Yeah, I was thinking of 'Temporary' as quite a while until becoming well enough off. I'm actually planning on staying it it, berming up earth around the sides, and attaching a greenhouse. My thought for shipping was pretty simple~ my father has a CDL. hehe Oh, SSS, don't make gardening sound too easy. I've been studying it for a long time. I try to be at least moderately versed in anything we might find necessary. Is there anything we should really put on a list that we need? I find it amusing to try to work out all these little practical problems. It's pretty fun and it'll be really helpful. Grouve on, Feel the Loves!
My mother has been teaching me to grow things since I was a small child( we live on farm)...so I got that skill good. I have no clue what a CDL is...lol...but if you want it..thats cool, I don't personally like that idea, I think that the container would be more of a harm to the surrounding area. with the metal and paint and stuff..but I don't know..and how is the metal mined for those things...open pit? lumber is bad aswell because it can be clear cut lumber...but most clear cutting is gone and they MOSTLY use selective cutting...yeah... what else...yeah, I don't care about wood stoves though, you want it you bring it, If you don't bring a wood stove with you, there will be plenty of supplies for a chimeny. and for agriculture...I do aswell think more than 5 acres will be needed... we will need about 1 acres of garden for each person, and even more land for vegitarians, then again the animals would require more land then the vegitables would. I figure 3-5 acres of land for the grazing animals, sheeps and goats. I believe that we should use as little space as possible for our personal dwellings, or make one large buidling for winter (or all year) and then have summer homes... I think it may be best to just have small homes very very close together. this way the community aspect is preserved, but we don't kill each other, and we have privacy. I think crafting will be a big skill we will need as long as perserving foods, like maiing pickles and such. for the crafting makeing things that we can bring to town during the summer when the tourists are up north and sell them our stuff. I dunno...
not sure what the laws concerning toilets are now but i was born in 1951 ..we had an old outhouse ...just a hole dug 4 ft in the ground and the outhouse moved over it ..when it started to fill a bit ,it was moved to another hole and the dirt used to fill up the other hole ...cost labor and the cost of the outhouse ...as far as letting carrots go to seed .....nobody does that ..seeds are too cheap to do that ....need a cold storage for vegetables?? no problem .........dig a hole big enough .......put a roof and put plastic over the roof ,then put dirt on top to insulate it .........will keep your vegetables from freezing ........preserved stuff ..even meat ....will keep for a minimum of 2 years if done right ......but you will still need money .....you can plan on not making enough to pay taxes but the tax on the land will have to be paid ........and if you do find land .try to make sure it is in an area where the local planning commission isn't a sticker for details .........also make sure the land is fertile .........as far as heating ..an average sized house ..you need a minimum of 5 acres mixed forest to substain it .............and no matter how romantic it looks ,stay away from a fireplace for heat ...get a good woodstove ....and a good prefab chimney ............you'll thank me for that piece of advice .....a fireplace just sucks the heat right out of the house
the CDL bit was an answer to the how I plan to get the thing to canada thing. it's a Comercial Driver's License;~ I was just saying that I do indeed have the means to get all this junk I'm talking about up there.
using the old shipping containers is better than letting them go to waste, I'd say. It's the cheapest way to get a warm, cozy house I've ever seen... and, if we were to group up our homes- or, better yet, have one large communal one- wouldn't putting a normal pit outhouse nearby be a majour pain? I mean, it's going to have some effect on how far we have to lug well water (wow, look at that- another expense), because I don't know about you, but I'm not willing to skimp on those particular standards~ sewage in the well's darinage cone is no fun at all Any thoughts or experience?
I figure your gonna have to take a little hike to use to out house..but thats ok...everything will be a little bit less convinent. we can make you a cart too pull your well water
hehehe <(^_^<) <(^_^)> (>^_^)> I was just thinking that if you're going to build a conventional outhouse, you have the option of convenient water source or convenient toilet. Thinking about it, it's probably a better idea to have the well being the one that's set off a bit. What I was originally thinking of was drilling the well under a building and putting in the composting toilet. But, cheaper is always a good thing, eh? hehe Grouve on, ~Kharmi
hmm...a well with a house around it..that would be very good... well..a convienent out hour would be nice..expecially in the winter. but I don't want to live next to my crap.
Yeah,~ I was thinking that, too. There's something very revolting about it... I think I'd rather walk <(^_^<) Then again,- it might take some getting used to, that unheated outhouse. hehe. Grouve on
you can drill a well then build a house over it but if it caves in or you have to redrill or if you have to change the foot valve you are out of luck ..best to drill it outside the house and just put a small insulated cabin over it and run the pipe to the house ...you will still be able to use a hand pump that way and it won't freeze inside
commercial driver's licenses requirements change from province to province ......if you are coming from the united states and you are licensed for what you are driving in your state ,it's valid here ..........here in new brunswick ,you can drive a single rear axle truck with a 10,000 towed weight as long as it isn't air brakes with just a regular driver's license ........air brakes needs an endorsemnt on your license ,written and practical test for that ,written and practical for a truck driver's license plus a medical for some classes ..
Well, I just found out my father's banned from Canada, anyway. Bummerage,~ maybe I'll have to think of something else. Oh, well. Grouve on
lol, you could always just tow a wood stove in like the back of a truck(pick up) it's not illegal to bring that across the border...they may give you hassle and search the shit out of everything.
Hello! I'm around Ottawa, and I've been looking like mad for anyone who seems serious about the commune idea... and it looks as if I've found people, I see. I can definitely contribute funds, and everything else that needs doing... doesn't the Timmins area seem a bit far North though? I know land is cheaper, but still... and especially with winter, the farther north you get. But yeah, definitely count me in.
it's actually not that bad I have a friend who lives up there and he says this year it hasn't been colder than -15C Right now we are still working on getting funds, the few of us close enough to get together (not ppl from the net) have been planning fund raiseing stuff. www.geocities.com/nature_commune_canada that has some info...not much really but it's a start. What we really need to start are physically able people, but once the commune is running then we will need all sorts! Remember Anyone can help! Namaste Hommies
your father is not you .even though he may be banned ,you,re not .as for getting a visa to stay ,that may be another story
...I was talking about the fact that I said I'd ask him to drive my shelter up there with me... (-_-)
