I think that some might feel that if you take the time to ''dress up'' for work, or a fancy occasion like a wedding, why wouldn't you put that same effort when going to church? I think personally, it's the condition of our hearts that matter most. If you're a tool, but dress to impress others for church and think God is impressed, you're still a tool.
It is true that people do treat others nicer if they're better dressed. Studies have shown it. And I've tried it out myself, and to my surprise I was treated nicer by others.
Well no one wants to really talk to someone who might be stinky. I'm a scrub, I stand at the bus stop in yesterday's clothes.

People will often refer to modesty as not having a certain amount of skin showing but that is not what it says in the Bible. Timothy 1:9 Likewise, I want the women to adorn themselves with respectable apparel, with modesty, and with self-control, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes. NIV So according to the Bible, it;s more important not to dress to show off.
I just find it ridiculous. Like God is someone totally cool, like Snoopy riding a skateboard in sunglasses. Everyone worships for their own good, barely cognizant of the kind of power they're invoking. God is the destroyer of all you know.
