i read Haunted after my teacher discussed the first story in the book. later that day i gathered up all the money i could and bought it. all i can say is WOW. that was one of the craziest books ive ever read. i couldnt down. next i think im going to read Choke or Fight Club. but he is definitely one talented writer
I agree with you 100% and I felt the same way after reading Haunted, but then I read Rant out of curiosity and it was fucking great. It had a lot of parts that were his typical sort've shockingness but it made very acute observations about human life and probably had the most actual philosophical value of any of his works. I've also read Survivor and Diary, which aren't on your list. Stay away from Diary whatever you do. It's his take on the average bestseller, and it's terrible (even more so than the average bestseller is). Survivor however, is absolutely great for any detractor of celebrities or organized religion and is at it's heart just a funny and entertaining book (sorta like Choke) that doesn't try too hard (like Fight Club).
i have read Lullaby, rant, survivor (my favorite), stranger than fiction and Diary. I love his dedication to detail in his characters personality. I always learn something new from his books, because of the way he writes facts into the story. The melancholy way that the characters view their lonely existence is so relate-able for people who have empathy and vivid imaginations. I would like to see more non fiction from chuck!
I gotta say, Rant is by FAR my favorite, I think i've read that twice a year, every year since it came out
when i was younger, i really loved fight club, but more recently i was lacking reading material and so i picked up two more of his books. i HATE his writing style now. i think theres an "age" for people with writers, if i'd have read all of his books immediately ater reading fight club, i'd probably have loved them, and i'd probably still love 'em today, but as it is, they leave me completely cold. much like i know people whose reading tastes are almost identical to mine, who read "catcher in the rye" at 15, and still list it as one of their favourites. i read it at 19, and thought it was overrated. i'm still interested in reading "guts" though, just cos of the reaction people have been having to it.
I enjoyed Fight Club although I saw the movie first and I felt it was one of those rare movies where it was just as good as the book. I also enjoyed Rant for these qualities that Duck aptly described... I started Haunted and while I didn't find it 'awful' I also didn't find it as interesting as the other two and the plot didn't really draw me in so I didn't finish it lol.
