Well I started my boxing day shopping already. I stayed up to order some clothes I wanted before they sold out in my sizes. I won't need to buy clothes for a while after this! I got some new things for every season now. I just cleaned out my closet and donated a ton of clothes though, so this was necessary.
We should also be allowed to just run over pedestrians that go against the lights Something about boxing day makes people just walk across the road whenever they want
Can you translate that into American English? My calendar says it's a Canadian holiday. That's all I know about it.
lol, pretty much. I always forget that the U.S. doesn't have that holiday. It's more a Commonwealth country thing. It's the day after Christmas, December 26, and originated I think in the 19th century in the UK, the day the servants were given their gifts (boxes, hence Boxing Day) from their employers. The servants were busy on Christmas Day, well...serving for their employers, so they would get their gifts the day after, when all the hustle and bustle subsided. Nowadays it's when the huge sales hit, similar to your Black Friday which we don't have here. Well not technically. With the WWW, we have access to Black Friday sales online.
Hello, I guess the price level in Canada and the US is nearly the same? I mean, market segmentation is a thing. I often can't buy stuff from the big on-line dealers from other countries. They won't deliver certain goods to Alemanistan. The reason is usually market segmentation. Goods are often much more expensive by the Alemanistanian branch of the dealers than by let's say the French or UK branch. And, of course, they want you to buy the same good for the expensive local price. Regards Gyro
Hello, {{waves}} I should have clarified. We have the same problem you do. It's not worth buying from Amazon.com for instance, but Amazon.ca will have Black Friday sales.
the radio station i usually listen to is out of ontario and they were advertising black friday just as much as any american media outlet this year. kind of caught me by surprise since black friday is basically just a random date in november for canadians.
Yeah a lot of stores here have started doing black friday. I really think it's because a lot of the larger chain stores that exist n both the us and canada just said screw it let's have sales across the board. I did not know that you guys don't have boxing day though. This is strange to me.
So does Boxing Day have any modern relevance besides shopping for good sales? I very vaguely remember reading something years ago about people regifting the Christmas presents they didn't want on Boxing Day, but it is a very vague memory so I could have it all wrong. I guess if Boxing Day is just a day of sales America technically celebrates it as stores do mark their inventory down a lot on Dec 26. We just don't call it Boxing Day.
I haven't heard of that one, Melai, but it seems like there are all kinds of origins of Boxing Day. I only knew of the one. And for it to officially be a Boxing Day sale, you have to see BOXING DAY SALES/ SPECIALS/ MADNESS splashed on every store in town, and receive emails every day for 2 weeks before, from every online store you've ever placed an order with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L99hWdZGelI Re Black Friday, I guess bigger cities are jumping on the bandwagon. I've lived mostly in smaller towns and I haven't seen Black Friday sales, only Boxing Day sales.
I don't think it has much modern relevance. It is a statutory holiday though, so most people get it off and those who don't get paid time and a half.
^ most places don't actually pay time and a half on holidays. people act like it's universal, but it's really just the government and a few factories. the same places that normally give days off for things like boxing day.
