There is an episode of the podcast ''Science Vs." about chiropractic that might help answer some questions for you. Pretty good podcast all around, too.

My parents are for them. I don't know and haven't been to one, but I have sciatica. I'm afraid that any sort of contorting isn't going to adjust the nerve per se. I had a coworker that used to tell me the same thing; that she had the same problem as me and that a chiropractor was able to adjust hers. I just don't know. But I can say that when I went to my doctor several times for sciatica he didn't issue a recommendation that I see one. He set me up on pain management for the short term, told me to make an appointment with the physical therapist and that was it. The follow up for these types of injuries is massive and tedious. It's really not a pleasant experience. In my opinion, it's all very psychological and not much can be physically done (about sciatica) without surgery. And I don't need surgery thankfully.

I only have experience with acupuncture. It seems to work very well for musculoskeletal pain issues.

Maybe a chiropractic treatment would help, I guess there's only one way to find out. I'm not sure how risky it is.

    There's also the cost/benefit issue.

For both acupuncture and chiropractic treatments, you might want to check if there's schools near you. Schools almost always have teaching clinics with reduced rates and pretty good quality care supervised by faculty.

For acupuncture, there's also www.POCAcoop.com. They offer community acupuncture (acupuncture in a group setting), usually for about $20 per treatment. I think teaching clinics are the better option, but they're still a good option.

Something about the thread title sounds like a Seinfeld setup.

What's the deal with chiropractors? It's an entire profession dedicated to treating the human spine like bubble wrap. It's basically the one job Snap, Crackle and Pop could get after being fired from Rice Krispies. My guess is these are people who wanted to be back specialists but weren't quite cut out for medical school. "I don't know about performing any sort of back surgery, but I know how to crack my knuckles."

It's like in the action movies where in the fight scene the hero grabs one of the bad guys and just twists his head and breaks his neck. That's basically what being a chiropractor is. Just once I'd like to see the movie where the guys does that and the villain is overjoyed. "You did it! The pain is gone!"

    "Fantastic! That'll be $120 please."

I've used Chiros from Florida to Oregon. Broke a disc in my spine ON the roof in Hawaii. It was like a toothache in my back. Carried to the bathroom by friends while involuntary tears came. Hurt like hell! Had an operation to fix it in Hawaii. Came back to the mainland and figured my illustrious roofing career was over. Friend said--"go see my cousin in Portland--he's a chiro. So he took x-rays and said--"I'll have you back on the roof in about 12 visits. He did. Still, every once in a while , it hurt, so I had to find a chiro around my hometown after I moved back. I was REALLY lucky--I got a guy in Visalia , calif and he was a dog-send. When i got to hurting, he would fix me right up and I would feel great for 6 to 8 months.

It's true that some are good and some are better yet. I would say that one that doesn't take x-rays should be avoided. Some are too rough, some are too gentle and some are juuuust right. If you see a chart showing how nerves come out from in between your vertebrae and go to all your organs, you can understand why chiropractic works. MDs will ,give you pain pills and/or operate if necessary. (which in my case was necessary, because the disc was actually broken.) If you get a good one say--because of a disc out of place, a good chiro can fix you and preclude an operation. After a session, it's always painful for a day or two, but NOTHING like before it was put back in place. So this is my experience and I hope it helps those of you with screwed up backs.

"Write" it makes it sound like I put a lot more effort into it, but yeah. I just kinda winged it. Why?

seems to me, once you crack something once, you have to keep cracking it.

I'm a bit of a Seinfeld fanatic. I've seen those bits so many times, and read the book "Sein Language" many times, and I just now how to mimic him.

I can't solve for X or read music, but I can do a mean Seinfeld impression...even in typed form.

I think i'm going to try accupuncture instead. Like this week, asap. I cant undress myself anymore and I had to hold back tears because someone hugged me and put pressure on my shoulder the other day.

I'm also going to an orthopedic doctor friend of my brother (he feels bad because he's the one who hugged me and made me cry lol) but probably cant get an appointment for a month or two so i'll try acupuncture first.

Don't worry if you don't think it's working first try hey, at least give it 3 tries. I really did feel things in acupuncture it's amazing how a spot near your ankle can send hot flushes straight to your pain in your back. I was diagnosed with something where although it felt really good, it just wasn't going to cure me, so I gave it away because it was just a waste of money in the long run, though I did enjoy the massages and the free Chinese tea. :p

Hopefully you don't have a structural problem and the pins can help. I gotta take heavy meds and there's really nothing I can do to fix it. I just need to support my back now to prevents any further damages. My lower discs are really bad :( and it gives me inflammation disease called Ankylising Spondelitus or something. It won't ever go and if I don't look after it, it can cause my back to fuse itself together and I won't be able to bend.

Luckily on second referral my back specialist said he wasn't confident the initial reports were as severe as it seemed, but he said I do have very bad low discs. He said he sees less damage in old people backs. But it hasn't risen as far up my back as the first reports suggested.

So this is why I always take a lot of hot bath if anyone ever wondered lol. It helps me get loose. And unlike other back problems the weird thing about AS is that, you feel better the more you move, but moving creates more inflammation. So catch 22

    Imo chiropractors are not Quacks.

Just dont go to a family member that's a chiropractor or a friend that's a chiropractor.

If they mis-calculate their adjustment on you and hurt you , cause temporary injury , or a permanent one, you'll have bad blood with a lawsuit you file on them because you can't work, sit or sleep right.

Pick your chiropractor well. Do research on their practice, see how many lawsuits were filed, any bad reviews. Remember these chiropractors inflict pain and discomfort to help in getting rid of pain and discomfort.

    It disenbowels Ying & Yang......

also keep in mind that people are much more likely to leave negative/bad reviews than good ones, sadly people aren't always good at giving praise when they are treated right but sure can dish out the dirt when they are not

So basically what you're saying is you sued a family member?

    Awkward

Also, not really boosting my confidence in chiropractors when you mention lawsuits for injuries lol

    So true.

I like to think i've gotten pretty good at sniffing out who had a legitimately bad experience and who just likes to whine about everything
