Right now, if you were to go off grid and run everything using clean electricity, good batteries alone would cost at least six thousand dollars. Its a vicious cycle, with solar power saving money in the long run, but largely only benefiting the wealthy and corporations like Walmart. The less electricity Walmart buys, the more expensive it becomes for everyone else. Cutting the price on lower cost home systems to half or a quarter of what it currently is, would be the first real step into a solar powered world. Cheap solar power cells are already available, and making them more durable as well is the next obvious step. That could bring the cost of a modest RV solar power system within reach of the poor. A recent advancement in passive air conditioning systems, promises to require 40% less power and produce potable water as a by product. Combined with cutting the costs of solar power in half it means poor people can afford air conditioning in the third world, where it is the most desperately needed. Unfortunately, even places like India often don't even have a highway system for distributing such technology, but one thing at a time.
In the meantime, you can invest in solar systems without expensive batteries and charge controllers. There are cheap grid tie inverters that dump the power back in the power utility grid, slowing your electricity meter down. You could also run 6-8 panels in series to get high voltage 100-140v to run a water heater element or something. Or just a couple cheap batteries and an AC inverter to run a freezer or fridge or small AC unit during the daylight.
