He trained Guerilla death squads in the congo which murdered hundreds of innocent people and left the Repulic of Congo in constant civil war until 1992.

They had 5 years of peace, and then became among the major staging grounds for the deadliest war since world war 2, in 1997. Over 5 million casualties, many were innocent women and children caught in the crossfire of ethnic conflicts, and theft of resources from the DRC.

I don't blame Che entirely for the Congo civil wars, but his militias did have a destabalizing effect on Congolese politics which continued into the beggings of the Congo civil wars.

He prevented no killings, he was a petty thug.

That sounds about right with me too.

Last semester, I had the coolest math teacher ever... she was a big lady, but she was like... 28 or 29. :D She'd sit down and go through a problem with me anytime. If she lost your test, she'd just give you an 80 if you usually do poor... she passed one person who had about a 20, too. I remember drawing pictures of blunts with people and she laughed and told us to make it look less like a blunt.

well, many of the facts that are presented are true, but the writer is selective in his use of facts, and presents them with his own biased opinions.

A marine journalist, who would have more acess to this sort of information from more first hand sources then say, most.

The first thing I googled up about Che in Congo called him a hero 8 or 9 times, and only mentioned his actions in Bolivia. Global Security was the first reliable resource that came up with some detail of his actions in the Congo, although not many are highly reported, what it says about him going to the Congo and training guirellas are facts.

The subsecuent wikipedia pages also bring to light the turbulent politics in the DRC.

I assume your not so naive that you read Major and Marine Corps, and gave up there. Information shouldn't be packaged to you, but history will always be tinged with opinion. Try that not to let that get in the way of several obvious things I brought to light about Guevara.

if you go to wiki's Che page, it will also mention his time in the Congo.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Che_Guevara

He brought about nothing but constant warfare to the ROC which led to constant insurgent attacks and overthrows on leaders. Having no central government made the irratated the Congo Civil wars 30 years.

I would never idiolize such a person.

Hi! Those that criticise Che Guevara in the manner that people seem to be doing so in this topic seem to me to be highly misinformed about his life. Che Guevara is not and never has been responsible for what happened in Cuba. He began his life wanting to practice medicine to help the poor and sick, but during his travels he was so appauled at the conditions people faced in Latin America that he wanted to spread revolution throughout that continent to defeat the cause, Western Imperialism and American-backed governments. The July 26th Movement was Capitalist in nature and the Social reforms (few ultimately benefitted the workers) that Castro brought in after they took power from the Batista dictatorship were due to Che's influence and American imperialism and opposition to a new government that wouldn't bow down to the rich Americans. Che was appauled at the policies Castro implemented and the conditions faced in countries such as the USSR and Cuba, hence the reason why he left Cuba eventually. I will say that his tactics of guerilla warfare were completely wrong, especially trying to impose them from outside into countries such as DRC and Bolivia where the conditions faced were completely different. On the subject of the DRC, the reason that civil war has raged there for so long is because warlords refuse to relinquish any power that they have. Che Guevara did not start the conflicts and to say that he started a war that lasted decades with few soldiers, many of whom disobeyed his orders, is ridiculous. How Western propaganda can penetrate the mind so easily.....

Also, for those that haven't read any Marxist theory, a Communist society is stateless. Cuba/North Korea/China/Vietnam are not Communist, and neither was the USSR ever. In the 19th century, "communist" was used to describe a person who wanted real social change and "socialist" to describe a utopian, hence the labels imposed on various countries. Nowadays, it seems to be the other way round. Revolution leads to Socialism, and Socialism to Communism (according to Marxist theory), all of which includes democratic rights. There has never been a Socialist country.

    Peace

There were almost no Civil wars in the DRC, Motubu consolidated power in the 60's and was relativly peaceful for the region until his overthrow by Kabila (sp?) in 1997. Guevara helped Kabila for a short time in the 60's, and helped extend his circle of influence within Africa. They never got along very well, but if Motubu hadn't have been replaced, the Congolese wars wouldn't have happened.

Hindsight I suppose, and I never said that Guevera was directly responsible for the Congo Civil Wars, but his actions in the ROC did lead to more civil strife amongst competing marxist elements in Africa. Particularly in the ROC, which had constant civil war up until the 90's. Che didn't start these fights, but he did irritate them.

Whatever you may feel is the right path to socialism has never worked, certainly not for China, certainly not for Burma, not the USSR, Cuba, they all tried.

Having the government look after the welfare of it's citizens isn't a bad idea, but crushing enterprise, and state run media's aren't good ideas. I'm not going to bring up the dubious human rights records, which socialism isn't responsible for, however, the idea may be far to utopian.

In any case, it's not working out well for European socities which overly regulate themselves either. (France) Adam Smith was right, competition drives all human activities. I think the Government should have the role of making that competition fair for everyone, not to designate the outcome of all economic activities.

I think the best Economic policy demonstrated by a country would by Canada, minus all the export subsidies.
