Why do Europeans and Canadians put an extra u in words that the US doesn't?

 

The English language derived from Deutsch and we use a lot of U's.

My brother married a half-German man.

My bff's late husband's mother was from Germany, speaking with a heavy accent (even tho' she lived here for 45+ yrs) until the day she died.
