Thank you. still not sure it's accurate enough though... i'm hoping that it was just a fluke and I forgot to actually recompile before burning the program to the chip. it HAS to be at least better now. I made the seconds longer, so it HAS to be faster now. if the clock is slower than it was somehoe I'm gonna be pissed I swear to god I'll fuckin smash this shit ... not really but damn, sometimes this shit just seems like some kind of voodoo. I just gotta wait till tomorrow and then look at it and see if it's better. it does seem pretty dead on right now. it's such a tiny amount of error (fraction of a second), but it does add up after a while. I may just have to accept it. :/ idk, now that I think of it, there's the whole issue of clock drift on the one I'm comparing it to as well. I'm using the clock on my PC as a reference on the assumption that it's perfectly accurate. I assume it's pretty good but I can't be sure how good it really is. I know that it has to be synced sometimes with a server to really be accurate .... hmmm.

omg, no shit it was slower. longer seconds make the clock slower, not faster. must have been confused. derr derr ... :p need to use the same math, but make them the same amount shorter ....

Cut it off twice and it's still too short...

dude holy fuck.....do you realize you could have been a second late for an important appt?

think of the money you would have wasted on parking?

idk, i guess i got confused because I was adding to the compare match value, what I needed was to subtract. subtraction makes the seconds shorter but "adds" time to the clock because it ticks faster....

Could the clock be off slightly just due to it being breadboarded instead of soldered to a circuit board? Breadboards add resistance to a circuit...

yeah, there's that too. not so much the resistance, but the stray capacitance due to the long paths. yeah, the resistance would be more too, not sure how that would affect it, but the little I know about EE ... resistance and capacitance together create some sort of oscillator ....

idk i'll probably end up making a pcb with programming headers .. test again and make another software adjustment if things change. what i'm doing now is every 4 ticks, make that second a tiny bit longer ... this makes up for the fractional part of the ideal compare match value calculated assuming a perfect crystal frequency. then, every 5 seconds, a tiny bit is subtracted, making THAT second a bit shorter, this makes up for the difference in nominal frequency and actual frequency. the code isn't the prettiest, could have just recalculated the compare match value and made one slip, instead of two. seperating the two was supposed to make it easier to change later, at least that was the idea ... never made a pcb before. I attempted it one time and it came out less than great, but this was a long time ago, i'm sure I'll use better tools this time :) it'd be nice to get rid of the rats nest of wires, I could use protoboard, but I think the connections are too many and it'd just be a nest of jumper wires on top of the board with a high probability of mistakes ....

May have got my laptop sorted and stopped the Windows 10 upgrade... Sort of.

It's updated Win7 but now every time it does a Win7 update, the screen says it's downloading the Win10 upgrade. Luckily it's not, it just needs to bug me about it.

I'm really going out of my way to help somebody I barely even know. And it's going to basically stall my movement for an hour or so this morning. But I feel a sense of accomplishment that I'm even willing to help. Basically I have a friend who bought a violin and its ready for mailing but had missed the line haul to move it to metro city. But the thing is the violin is made in my city. So it's here. And I reached out to him and said it is actually possible that if they let me then I can pick it up for you then you just need to come drive to me to pick it up for the weekend.

I don't see why, if it's possible for me to help someone, why I wouldn't? Well that's what I'm feeling right now.
