Isn't powerade meant to be a hydration formula drink? That's why I have it. There's no science behind my hangover cure, it just works for me. =]

I'm no mechanic, but if you've got a bad water pump, you aren't pumping your coolant correctly through your engine and can cause engine damage. I can't see the water pump sucking air in, but if you're leaking from a faulty headgasket, I could see that being a problem.

as long as you keep an eye on the temp, you can get away with lousy pump..

The impeller is perfect - I had an unrelated cooling problem and pulled it off to check it out not too long ago. The replacement has a stainless impeller, but my oem one is cast aluminium, so it can't rust away.

When water pump bearings fail, they squeal and coolant gets around them - the pump housing is designed with a "weep hole", allowing coolant to leak and let you know that there's a problem.

Modern coolant systems are designed to run under pressure (to increase the boiling point of water - and density, and thus, heat it can carry, and total possible temperature of an engine that can be water cooled - and maybe other things - efficiency, I suppose, so they can get away with smaller bits and pieces). As the motor warms up, it pressurizes the water, and when it's maximum is reached, it pushes the excess pressure through a spring-loaded radiator cap, into an overflow tank. When the motor cools and the coolant contracts again, it sucks the water it pushed into the overflow back through the radiator cap.

My concern was that maybe the suction created by the cooling water could pull air in through the pump bearings (recall that excess clearance there is what makes the pump leak, and lets you know it's bad) instead of water through the radiator cap. It would be very little at a time, but over time accumulate - air bubbles cause overheating, because they don't transmit the heat from the engine into the coolant water, they act as insulation. And it causes uneven overheating that you may not see on the gauge at first, which is about the worst way overheating could happen.

When it starts leaking enough that I'm worried my overflow will go dry and let bubbles in, or when it starts bothering me, I'll change it. For the moment, I have a bunch of distilled water in the trunk, and I never go anywhere without all the tools to do almost any job on the car, anyway.
