A new theoretical computer model describes how the patterns are likely created, beginning in the 10th week of gestation, when a fetus is about 3 inches (80 mm) long.

Early signs of stress

Fingerprints involve three distinct features: arches, loops and whorls.

Michael K?cken and Alan Newell of the University of Arizona found that creation of the patterns involves stresses in a sandwiched sheet of skin called the basal layer. In a fetus, the basal layer grows faster than surrounding layers -- the epidermis on the outside and the inner dermis. The basal layer buckles and folds in several directions, forcing complex shapes.

Stresses are created at skin boundaries, including fingernails and knuckle creases, as well as around shrinking fingertip pads, K?cken and Newell report in an October issue of the journal Europhysics Letters.

"These folds encode the future fingerprint pattern that becomes visible on the skin surface in subsequent weeks," K?cken told LiveScience. "Because the fingerprint pattern is coded underneath the skin surface, the pattern cannot be destroyed by superficial skin injuries."

Exactly, how the pattern is preserved during growth of the fetus is still unclear, he said."

 

So I took a good step today.
Feeling crap for having slept away the daylight hours and shakey from lack of food, I went to get some Swiss Chalet for supper. It's kinda a distance and right near a friend's place that I haven't really had contact with since her brother and I stopped talking/hanging out.

I've been wanting to reach out to her as a support person for months because she's a really great and understanding person. She's a social worker by career, as well. And I know she's into exactly the kind of things that I'm looking into for healing.

Well, I was in the neighbourhood. Hub's away so I had no excuse for having to go straight home. So I ate my chicken and then showed up on her doorstep.

It was awesome. We talked and talked. About my shit. About her shit. About the mental health system. But not only was the talking great but as a social worker she had better and more information for groups and outreach centres in the city than the fucking people at the psych places I've been to so far. She's also a part of a few women's groups and I'm gonna try and get out to a drumming circle on Sunday.

It took months. It was hard as fuck. But reaching out to this person has been one of the best things I've done in such a long time.
