......from one of those crappy standard pics to something better, how does one go about it? I can't seem to find anywhere to input a url or upload a pic.

User CP--Edit Avatar (on left)--Scroll down to 'custom avatar'. If you want to upload a pic from your computer then you need to first make it 70 by 70 pixels in a program like Paint.

 

I don't seem to have a custom avatar option only the generic ones or none at all.
