As you all know many people nowadays have a cell phone as their only phone instead of landline home phones. Is this the best thing for everyone? My cousin has a cell phone as her only phone. The problem was that recently she lost the phone and had no phone for making any calls. This got me wondering if it was a good idea to have a cell phone as your only phone? I mean you can loose the phone, have it stolen or damage it after dropping it on concrete. I think everyone should have at least two phones. Either having a home phone plus a cell phone or two cell phones. What's your opinion on this? Are some people's situations better for still having a landline home phone? Or are some people's situation better for just a cell phone?

A good article on the pros and cons of this:

I have both right now only because I have a business in my home and someone might need to call out when I am gone with my phone. My land line is tied to my cell so all incoming calls to the house go right to my cell even when out but someone at the house could call out if needed on the land line. If they need to receive calls they need to own a cell phone, even a cheap one will get them what they need. Used to be I had just a cell phone, why have both unless you need it.
Now your cousin, if she had a land line too that would only mean she could call out if at home so she is likely still screwed for the most part because people usually get used to the freedom of calling when not home anyway, and they keep lots on them, unless she is a homebody type anyway, then a land line would be best for her in the first place.
I have never dropped mine, sept my first one and it didn't damage it and I have an OxBox (I think it's called) on this one, lots of rubber around it for impact and hopefully If I do drop it that will save it, it sure does make for better grip and less chance of slippage. I would be screwed without mine, it has everything on it so I make sure I don't leave it out to be stolen, not even on a table in a restaurant, Once it's used it goes back in my pocket.

Also, just to make mention on the yahoo quote you have there, yes I believe all phones will dial to 9-11 but further, don't all cell phones now run GPS? If so wouldn't they find you if you did call for help?
Not sure because maybe the GPS doesn't work if not hooked up, just checking.

Aaah, for the days when if you were injured you had to drag your bloody corpse to the nearest public payphone...

To those only with cell phones. Have you considered how you would handle communicating at your home if your cell phone was lost, stolen or damaged? My cousin went into panic mode when she thought her cell phone was stolen. That was her only phone.

Yup, have considered it, many years now. You must be careful and if you do lose it then call the nearest phone company, they will hook up a land line in no time if you want to go that way, or insure your mobile and have it replaced, keep all info somewhere else as well.
Sorry for your cousin but there are ways to deal with it.

Until I had my business in the house I never had anything more then my cell and it's paid me well to have it on the road with me, the land line would have rang and been unanswered, I used to get calls for an emergency over time shift at work that paid me at least three hundred bucks for the day so Even back then it would pay me to replace it in a hurry if I had lost it. Land line is useless unless you are home a lot or need it for business reasons. People are slipping away from landline use. It's going to be in the past, old history. In many cases there are more then one cell phone in a household anyway. Wife, hubby, kids,,, next the dog will have a need for one. Go with it, it's the new way and it's also cheaper to have one system or another rather then both.

Here in Sweden most people only use cellphones. Land lines are starting to become a rare thing. I think it works great! I've never lost my phone or anything so I can't comment on that.

Has anyone tried a wireless home phone system? To those not familiar it's another way to move from landline while still having a home phone.

would it be the end of the world if someone didn't have a phone for a day or 2 while you get a new cell if you lost or broke yours.

Remember when we didn't have cell phones? Remember when we had to be home when someone called or we couldn't talk to them? How did we ever survive?

I only have 1 cell phone. It's my work and personal phone. I have it with me at all times. If its not in my hand its sitting right next to me. I've never lost a phone. If something were to happen to it I would simply go to us cellular and get a new one. It's not really that difficult.

I just have a cellphone, and it's not a problem. I go for price and convenience. I can get by on a simple $10 TracFone that lasts 2 years, then I just buy another one. I don't call much, so a $20 phone card lasts about 2 months. That's really all I need, and if I drop it and break it I just buy another $10 phone, and when I activate it my minutes from the old phone still transfer to the new phone.

I report people I see driving and texting or talking with it to the ear. Have nailed a couple already and our cops are even doing cell phone watches to snag the offenders here. One time they did a day of it and reported nearly a hundred tickets, great way to kill a day that isn't busy for them.

Mine is with me all the time but it's not glued to me. I only make a call if I need to while out and answer it if I need to while out. Some calls go to answering machine and lots of times that is because I really don't want to talk to some people while out doing other stuff. I actually hate to see people at a store arguing with their kids or other family members while I stand or sit near them. It's pretty bad when people can't control their kids better so they can go out and have a nice time away from them. Funny what you can learn about people just by listening to their crap in public.

I'm between cell phones.Haven't been bothered to transfer all my numbers to my new phone.People still calling me on my old one.New phone has email and internet though, which is great, but I only get 500MB internet data usage a month on my plan,so it's just for emergencies like when I need to check London transport and stuff like that...TFL (Transport For London they call it...But I call it FTL - "Faster Than Light." I don't have a landline.
