That is a little off because, what happens all around, people who have less money have to go to town centers to work during the day. Usually the trip is long so taking public transport or using a vehicle is necessary. Most people even though they would like to be more enviermentally friendly there is just no way out... for example here in Sao Paulo Brazil, many subway lines and stations are being built to extend the existing ones... but till that happens and these new lines reach just about everybody (like NY) there is little we can do.

woah, I was just thinking about if this exact thread was made here. But cars help if your going far, but I hate it when people drive just to go a couple of miles, it's dangerous business.

I feel for ya, dudette. Cars are nothing but hell from A to Z. Reminds me of the time I put this infinitessimal ding in some old bee-itch's door and she nearly took me to court for it. Cost like $150 to fix and you can bet my insurance went nuts. I could go on. Life without a car is interesting, challenging, fun, relaxing, guilt free, sometimes a problem (that always works out somehow) and HOPEFULLY I'll never go back. The temptation and pressure continues though. What a weird world.

Environmentally I'm not so worried...my car is fairly clean, doesn't spew smoke or nasty visible exhaust, and gets 35-40 mpg. it's a really good car...as far as cars go. Honda all the way! I'd love a hybrid, but come on. I can't afford that.

I'm getting a bike. End of. When I move to the city it shouldn't be so bad, because there are bike lanes and the bus is free to college students.

But I do need to keep a car...I want to use it as little as possible, but I travel and move a lot.

The thing that bothers me the most about driving a car is:
a)how often we drive unecessarily, like to go a mile or two. It's ridiculous.
b)how dangerous a vehicle can be. Especially in certain hands...
c)how damned expensive it can get. I have liability insurance...which means my insurance won't cover the damage to MY car. Most of the damage is aesthetic, so I don't care about that..but a the yellow glass over my blinker was busted and the headlight is falling out. I need to get that fixed...
d)how the car to person ratio is usually 1:1. Maybe a few more people if they're under 16...most people own their own car. Carpooling almost never happens, so there are dozens of people in the same traffic jam headed from the same area going to the same destination. silly.

    one big headache. :(

Actually, NO, we have a community shared media room ( internet, video, telephone), in our small rural community, and we all share (3 of us), a dial-up, very slow but still effective computer.

A schoolbus can have everything, we have electricity, so we have video, audio, and lights,(no running water). We lived for 15 years with no power in cabin tents, and know how that goes too.

Okay, your car got so badly smashed because it’s a Honda. All new cars are built like shit. If you want to fix it yourself you need to bang out the dent. I would try taking a 1 inch thick piece of plywood put it on the hood (to distribute the force) and hit it with a sledge hammer. I’m not sure if that will work of not, but somehow try to straighten the hood. After that spray paint anywhere the paint is cracked (to prevent rust).

    well.
my philosphy has always been public transportation is the answer. subways, buses, anything.
a system that WORKS like in europe, boston, new york etc...
just eliminate personal cars.. theyve become such a destructive and dangerous commodity.
people are well.. too selfish to give cars up and advocate for a practical public transportation system. it would take work, yes, but no one at this point seems willing.

people cant see the issue at hand.
they only notice the problem that sits right in front of their faces for years when the situation progresses into some sort of crisis.

I live too far out from any civilization to give up my car.

It would take days for me to get anywhere by foot or bike.

Yep, me too. Takes me an hour to get to the nearest town on my (motor)bike, on a pushbike it would take me all day.
Still, if it's just one person, a motorbike is more green than a car; uses a LOT less fuel - I get about 80 mpg on my bike. Sadly the fuel tank only holds about a gallon and a half ;)
