Carrie Movie Blurb by Shale October 18, 2013 This week, in prep for the remake I watched Brian De Palma's 1976 Carrie. For one thing, that movie is so dated, with all the guys with long hair (one rivaling Farah Fawcett) that it was a distraction. So, I kinda looked forward to seeing a modern version of this old Stephen King horror story. I, wasn't disappointed in it and like 69% of audiences on Rottentomatoes, liked it. Of course only half the aggregate critics there liked it. I never read the novel so I can't compare how it holds up to that, nor do I care. And, as stated I did see the previous outdated movie and this one is at least as good. (I know, it's a classic now, despite the fact that it was a low-budget movie with lots of glitches and novice actors - aside from Piper Laurie). So, I guess the fact that I don't consider the original movie as sacrosanct is why I can enjoy this one so well. This movie follows all the events of the previous one where Carrie White (Chloe Grace Moretz) is raised by religious fanatic mother Margaret (Julianne Moore). This portrayal shows that the mother has real psych problems with self-injurious behavior. Just like the original, Carrie is raised to be anti-social and is indoctrinated with a fear of others while living with a fearsome abuser who locks her in a closet to pray. Carrie & Mom Pray At school Carrie, being a late bloomer has her first period in the shower and freaks out, much to the amusement and taunting of the other girls. One, Chris (Portia Doubleday) gets the episode on her cell fone and posts it on the Web. (See, needed updating to show modern bullying IRL and on the Web). BTW, do not expect all those naked girls in the locker room casually walking around full frontally exposed. That was in a '70s movie when nudity was popular with the Woodstock generation. The girls coach, Miss Desjardin (Judy Greer) tries to comfort Carrie and really comes down on all the girls who tormented her. Chris being unrepentant and defiant gets suspended from the Prom and then seeks revenge. This is also where Carrie discovers her new power of telekinesis. Carrie & Coach Talk Sue (Gabriella Wild) feels remorse for joining in the mob in the locker room and convinces her BF Tommy (Ansel Elgort) to take Carrie to the Prom. Tommy & Sue Talk Well, the bad girl who got suspended gets help from her boyfriend to spill a bucket of pig blood on Carrie at the Prom, which sends Carrie off into her telekinetic destructive revenge rage. Bloody, Angry Carrie
OK, I have to admit that the bone structure in Sissy Spacek's face and her bulging eyes were more convincingly mad than those of Chloe Grace-Moretz. Sissy Spacek Blood Covered 1976 Chloe Grace-Moretz Blood Covered 2013 And, just as in the original movie when Piper Laurie played the mother so much smoother than all those kids in their first movie role, Julianne Moore was very convincing as the mad mother in this movie. Mother With Knife
im not sure if it was lame because its a 5 dollar hijacked copy. but come on, anyone with the memory of the first will think this remake sucked.
I disagree and I watched a very good DVD this week. It also had features where they mentioned the wrong things that happened on set, the problems with the experimental filmaking like the extended shots that went all over the room. Good technical stuff but was it really necessary on a low-budget movie like this. Oh, the original has its qualities but is not such a great movie to say this one sucks in comparison.
The original worked cos Spacek was a pretty weird looking chic. Whereas Moretz seems to be the kind thats being groomed to be future A list, has a very generic look They needed a girl that looked weirder for this to work
its 2013, id hope some the tech would be better... maybe i/ am being biased because John Travolta isnt in it.. or the character of the past.... or the nastelgia is ruined.. Spacek always creeps me out.... that chiclk is odd...
Vanilla Gorilla I think Chloe was approx' 15 when she filmed this, and Sissy was approx' 25. Lets just say, a lot can happen to woman in 10 years... I think they did a good job with finding a girl that was similar enough - but, yeah, there is only so much a 15 year old child is going to bring to this... To be fair, Chloe is pretty weird looking and not that generic... I'm looking forward to watching the film... Any breasts? Sissy was a lot prettier, imho
I totally agree. Finally saw this on DVD and I ended up falling asleep 20 minutes into it. The original Carrie still creeps me out. Some movies should never be remade: Psycho is a good example. Tony Perkins was perfect as Norman Bates. Sissy Spacek was perfect as Carrie White. I just hope they don't do a remake of Misery! QP I'm pretty sure that Carrie had dark hair (not blond) in the Stephen King book. So I wonder why Hollywood feels the need to forever change the color of her hair?
